Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN - The Saltdogs overcame an early deficit, scoring the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a three-game losing streak and edge the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 in front of 2,771 fans at Haymarket Park Monday night.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the last of the eighth, Curt Smith led off with a triple to right center. Three batters later Vance Albitz came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out. He chopped a ball up in the middle against a drawn-in infield to produce an RBI fielder's choice, giving the 'Dogs the decisive run.

Albitz entered the game after the third inning to replace Gavin Dickey, who injured himself running up the first base line in his second at-bat.

Jon Nelson was brought in to replace Albitz, who ordinarily plays shortstop, moving from designated hitter to left field at the start of the ninth. The move paid off as Nelson made a terrific running catch over the wall in foul territory to secure the final out and end the game.

Nick Schreiber pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. Mike Williams went two innings, allowing a run on one hit while striking out four and walking zero to suffer the loss. PJ Zocchi pitched a scoreless ninth to tally his seventh save.

Smith finished the night going 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs. Blake Gailen went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a run.

The teams meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. for game two of the four-game series. Tim Brown (2-2, 5.00) is slated to pitch for the Saltdogs against Luis Villarreal (0-0, 4.50) for the Goldeyes.

June 7 is T-Shirt Tuesday sponsored by Ameritas. The first 1,000 fans through the gate at Haymarket Park will receive a 'Hook the Goldeyes' T-Shirt. For more team and ticket information, please call 402-474-BALL or visit www.saltdogs.com .
