Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats won their third straight and evened their record at 12-12 after erupting for six runs in the first en route to a 7-3 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at U. S. Steel Yard Monday evening.
Fans were treated to a performance by American Idol's Chris Medina pre-game and the fun rolled over into the first inning of tonight's contest despite a two-run homer by the X's T.J. Bohn that put the home team in an early two-run hole. The RailCats answered exploding for six in the home half of the frame collecting four hits and sending eleven men to the plate against Sioux City starter Nick Schumacher who took the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season.
Each team added another run later on but it was the RailCats night as starter Derrick Gordon (2-2) rallied to put together an excellent performance. The lefty pitched 6.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight X's hitters. Reliever Will Krout pitched the final 2.2 innings for the 'Cats and was untouchable striking out five and not allowing a hit. Once again eight of the RailCats in the starting lineup collected a hit and Mike Valadez was the sole 'Cat with multiple hits contributing a pair of RBI to go along with his pair of singles.
After Adam Klein was hit by a pitch and Chris Carrara singled two batters later, Lorenzo Scott picked up where he left off in his debut last night with a sharp single through the left side to drive in the first run. Following a Craig Maddox walk, first baseman Mike Rohde drew another walk with the bases loaded which allowed Carrara to cross the plate. Toddric Johnson's RBI groundout put the 'Cats ahead 3-2 and Valadez followed up with a two-RBI single to make it 5-2. Shortstop Brian Kolb drove in the final run of the inning with a double to right giving the 'Cats a 6-2 lead and extended his hitting streak to six games.
The Explorers cut the advantage to 6-3 after back-to-back doubles by Ryan Priddy and Dustin Jones but came no closer as the RailCats stretched the lead back to four when Mike Massaro tripled to centerfield driving in Klein from first.
NOTES: RailCats outfielder Toddric Johnson left the game after four and was replaced by Cristian Guerrero...Infielder Brian Kolb extended his hitting streak to six games fellow infielder Chris Carrara for the longest of the season for the RailCats...Guerrero had his hitting streak snapped at five games
The RailCats and Explorers meet again Tuesday night for a 7:10 pm start for Hillbilly Hoedown at U. S. Steel Yard. The 'Cats look to take control of the series with righty Scott Shaw (2-2, 5.73) on the hill, while the X's send Taylor King (1-1, 5.32) to the mound.
