Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - The Oklahoma City Dodgers started and ended Friday's game with a three-run inning to go along plenty of solid pitching in between during a 6-2 win over the Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park.
For the first time this season, the Dodgers have won three straight games and also claimed their first 2-0 series lead of the season. The loss was Memphis' 10th straight.
The Dodgers (20-34) shot out to a 3-0 lead three batters into the game. Connor Joe led off with a single and Zach Reks followed with a walk. Kyle Garlick then hit an opposite field homer out to right field, marking the second straight night he connected on a three-run homer.
Memphis (23-33) also got on the board in the first inning. Tommy Edman led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Lane Thomas.
The game stayed stuck at 3-1 for the next six innings. Following Garlick's homer, the Dodgers then went 0-for-12 with runners on base and struck out 13 times.
Meanwhile, Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino turned in his best outing of the season. After giving up the quick run in the first inning, he didn't yield another over a season-high six innings. Following back-to-back walks with two outs in the third inning, Corcino retired the final 10 batters he faced.
Corcino (4-2) gave up a total of three hits, with two walks and a season-high eight strikeouts, keeping the Dodgers ahead by two while he was in the game.
The Redbirds cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Edmundo Sosa led off with a solo home run. Edman then singled, putting the tying run on with none out. Dodgers reliever Kevin Quackenbush struck out the next two batters before Edman stole second base. Quackenbush then induced a flyout off the bat of Tyler O'Neill to maintain the lead.
The Dodgers doubled their run total in the span of two pitches in the ninth inning. With two runners on and two out, Garlick lined a RBI single to center field. On the very next pitch, Shane Peterson drove a two-run double to the right-center field gap to extend the lead to 6-2.
Garlick picked up at least four RBI for the second straight game. Through the first two games of the series, he's 5-for-9 with two homers and nine RBI.
Memphis put the tying run on deck twice in the ninth, but could not get it to the plate. JT Chargois battled his command and walked two batters in the ninth, but he wrapped up the game by striking out Sosa to preserve the win.
After the teams combined for 26 strikeouts Thursday, they combined for 29 more strikeouts Friday. The Dodgers struck out 15 times, but the pitching staff also whiffed 14 Memphis batters.
The Dodgers look to continue their recent roll when they face the Redbirds at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. Live coverage begins 15 minutes before first pitch on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com and through the free iHeartRadio or MiLB First Pitch apps.
