Wheeling Nailers News Release

Mario Larocque is back with the Wheeling Nailers. The Tampa Bay Lightning's first round pick in the 1996 NHL entry draft has been assigned to the Nailers after signing a contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.

Larocque is a solid presence on the blue line, not only defensively, but in all situations. A season ago Larocque served as the assistant captain of the Nailers, finishing the season with 44 points in 66 games. The 6-3, 210 lb. native on Montreal, PQ is a strength on special teams and features a strong slap shot from the point. Larocque scored 18 goals in a Nailers uniform last season.

"Mario is a great fit with our team,'' said Nailers head coach Pat Bingham. "He's the most experienced defenseman we have here and will be an asset on special teams."

Larocque played five games in the NHL with Tampa Bay and has also played in the IHL with the Cleveland Lumberjacks and the Detroit Vipers. In the 2001-2002 season Larocque finished with 18 points in 75 games with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

"Mario is a big, mobile defenseman with a wealth of experience,'' said Bingham.

The Nailers return home Nov. 1 to battle the Toledo Storm at 7:30 p.m. at Wesbanco Arena. Saturday night is H.E. Neumann-WEEL FM Magnet Schedule Giveaway night. On Sunday Nov. 2 the Nailers host the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies at 2 p.m. The Nailers will unveil their third jersey before the opening face-off..
