October 24, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â Quinn Fair and Denis Ladouceur scored 2:02 seconds apart in the third period to give the Bakersfield Condors a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the San Diego Gulls Friday night at Centennial Garden.
The Gulls (1-1-0) carried a 1-0 lead into the final period, which looked pretty safe against an offensive-struggling Condors team, who scored only two goals in their previous three games.
Bakersfield (1-3-0) was shutout in its two first games and then fell to Las Vegas 4-2 on Tuesday. The Condors were blanked through the first two periods tonight, but found life in the third and skated away with their first victory of the young season.
Fair got Bakersfield on the board with a power-play goal at 4:13 of the third. The Condors captain grabbed the puck at the right circle and blasted a rising slap shot past rookie netminder David Burleigh for his second goal of the season.
Ladouceur put the Condors up 2-1 with his first tally 2:02 later. Daniel Karlsson knocked the puck into the Gulls zone, which rolled around the San Diego defense. Ladouceur jumped on it and deflected it by Burleigh.
San Diego had a few chances later on, but Joe Watkins and the Bakersfield defense stood tall to preserve the one-goal victory.
The Gulls, who've only scored two goals in two games so far this season, jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on Billy Tibbetts' first goal of the season. Greg Barber took the puck away along the right wing boards and found Mark Pederson in the left circle. Pederson drew the Bakersfield defense toward him and then quickly fed Tibbetts, who wristed it past Watkins.
Burleigh, making his professional debut, stopped 26 shots tonight in a losing effort. He got the start after Trevor Koenig was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week.
Notes: Koenig, who earned his 100th career win with the Gulls last week, was placed on the seven-day injured list with a sore groin. He will be able to return for Tuesday's game in Las Vegas... Joel Heintz signed as the emergency back-up goaltender... Dennis Purdie sat out for the second straight game win a sinus infection... Trent Clark, who was with San Diego for most of last season, signed in time for tonight's game... Defenseman Bryan Vines was traded to the Long Beach Ice Dogs earlier this week... Rookie forward George Davis was recalled by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks... Former Gull Jason Courtemanche signed with the Condors today. He ranks fourth all-time in San Diego franchise history with 854 penalty minutes... Dating back to the 2001-02 season, the Gulls have only lost three times when leading after two periods...
The Gulls conclude their road trip Tuesday in Las Vegas before opening the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Idaho Steelheads. The first 10,000 fans will get their very own pair of Gulls Thunder Sticks, courtesy of 4-Lawyer.com. And in honor of Halloween, it's going to be a blackout...so all fans are encouraged to dress in ALL BLACK to show their Halloween spirit! Kids 14 and under can wear their costumes and "Trick-or-Treat" on the outer concourse during the game! And, your favorites from KGB 101.5 FM will be there to keep everyone entertained all game long. All games can be heard on AM1360-KPOP with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
