The Gwinnett Gladiators jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening period and cruised to a 5-1 victory in their home opener at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Jim Jackson opened the scoring at the 7:20 mark as he centering feed was deflected off an Augusta defenseman's skate and past goaltender Peter Hamerlick for the first Gladiators goal scored at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Evan Nielsen finished a flurry in front of the Augusta net as he buried a rebound past Hamerlick at the 16:23 mark of the opening period. Paul Flache and Cam Brown added the assists as the Gladiators pressured netminder Hamerlick.

Four minutes into the second period, Phil Lewandowski took a centering feed from Paul Flache in the high slot and ripped a shot past Hamerlick to extend Gwinnett's lead to 3-0.

Augusta got on the board 52 seconds into the third period as Greg Jacina's one-timer beat Gladiators goaltender Michael Garnett. Josh Bennett added the assist on the goal.

Anthony Aquino pushed the Gwinnett lead back to three goals as the beat Hamerlick on a nifty move in front of the Augusta net. Kevin Doell and Kris Goodjohn added the assists on the play.

Kevin Doell rounded out the scoring at the 17:15 mark of the third as he tallied his first goal of the season, unassisted, on the power play.

Michael Garnett picked up the win as he made 17 saves for the Gladiators in his first start after arriving mid-week. The Gladiators went 1-for-7 on the power play while preventing the Lynx from picking up a goal on their six power play chances.

The Gladiators are in the middle of a three game home stand tomorrow night when they host the Charlotte Checkers at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. The first 10,000 fans to tomorrow night's game will receive a Rally Towel courtesy of Kroger & accessAtlanta.
