Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY -- Joe Whitney netted the game-winning goal 34 seconds into overtime, lifting the Albany Devils to a 4-3 victory against the Springfield Falcons Saturday at Times Union Center. Whitney finished the game with three points and Scott Wedgewood earned his fifth win of the season, making 22 saves.
Brandon Burlon found Whitney in the slot for a wrister that fooled Springfield netminder Oscar Dansk.
"We were trying to be patient four-on-four and get some two-on-ones," Whitney said. "Burlon made a heads up play, I gave him a shout and he put the puck on my tape. I just tried to get a quick shot on net and luckily it went in."
David Wohlberg, Graham Black and Reid Boucher each scored in regulation as the Devils improved to 14-10-2-4. Springfield received goals from Josh Anderson, Frederic St. Denis and Ryan Craig. Dansk made 21 saves as the Falcons moved to 21-9-2-0.
Wohlberg started the scoring at 6:09 of the second period, stealing the puck in the defensive zone and racing for a breakaway tally -- his first of the season. Black followed, redirecting Reece Scarlett's point shot at 6:41.
Springfield responded with back-to-back power-play goals. Anderson scored at 8:20 and St. Denis found the back of the net at 11:19.
Albany answered with a power-play goal of their own. The team swarmed the Falcons net and Whitney retrieved a loose puck and setup Boucher for a one-timer near the goal line at 15:39. The goal was Boucher's ninth of the season and extended his point streak to six and his goal streak to four games.
In the third, Craig redirected Denny Urban's point shot at 7:58 for the team's third power-play tally of the evening to force overtime.
Albany, which squandered a third period lead at Syracuse Friday, went 1-3 on the power play and 3-6 on the penalty kill.
"These games after the break, sometimes you're a little concerned," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "I thought last night, we had it wrapped up there and couldn't close it out and lost in overtime. So tonight, I thought we deserved a little better.
"They were able to capitalize and that certainly hurt. Every time we got momentum, they grabbed it back with a power play. But for the most part, five-on-five, we did a good job and deserved to win."
