Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - For the second consecutive night, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins suffered a shutout at the hands of their opponents as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers skated to a 5-0 win on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Sound Tigers goalie David Leggio stopped 19 shots to gather his first shutout of the season and forward Colin McDonald recorded two goals and an assist against his former team.
Holding a 1-0 lead after one period of play, the Sound Tigers were able to utilize a 5-on-3 power play early in the second to stretch their lead to two. Penguins defenseman Barry Goers got in the shooting lane of Harry Zolnierczyk, only to have the puck ricochet to the near post, where a wide-open Colin McDonald roofed a shot over goalie Matt Murray with two minutes gone in the frame.
Bridgeport doubled its margin over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with back-to-back goals in the final five minutes of the second. Sebastien Collberg was able to bang home a rebound at 15:44 of the period and it was Scooter Vaughan sending a second chance to the back of the net 50 seconds later to put the Sound Tigers on top, 4-0.
The Penguins were unable to break up Leggio's shutout bid in the third period and McDonald added his second tally of the night with 11.5 seconds left in regulation to complete the scoring.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fell behind, 1-0, at 8:25 of the first period after enjoying some sustained offensive zone pressure. The Sound Tigers broke up ice in to the Penguins zone before Collberg found Kael Mouillierat trailing into the slot for a quick one-timer past the right side of Murray.
Murray made 27 saves on 32 shots as his record falls to 5-6-1 on the season. The Penguins went 0-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Signed to a professional tryout agreement on Friday night, Shavertown, Pennsylvania native Patrick McGrath made his American Hockey League and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins debut in the contest.
The Penguins close out the weekend versus the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 4:05 p.m.
