Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Syracuse's Matt den Dekker drilled a go-ahead home run against Pat Light with two outs in the top of the 13th inning to snap a 1-1 tie and propel the Chiefs to a 2-1 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday night in the rubber-match of a three-game series before 7,715 fans at McCoy Stadium.
den Dekker, who's RBI single in the third inning had driven home the other Syracuse run, crushed a ball that sailed over the bullpen in right field for his seventh homer of the season and third against the PawSox. Light (1-3) had retired the first two batters of the inning.
The Chiefs (56-70) finished the season series against Pawtucket (48-78) with 14 wins in the 19 meetings, including victories in 12 of the final 13 matchups between the squads. Syracuse starter A.J. Cole shut out the PawSox for seven innings while recording eight punch outs.
Matt Grace relieved Cole in the eighth and allowed an infield single to Deven Marrero, who then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Quintin Berry. Then with two outs, Allen Craig ripped an RBI single to knot the score at 1.
Each team received terrific work from its bullpen. Pawtucket relievers Robby Scott (three innings), Ryan Cook (two innings) and Jonathan Aro (three innings) blanked Syracuse from the fifth through the twelfth innings while allowing only two hits.
Scott McGregor (6-5) stranded the winning run at third base in the bottom of the 12th and earned the victory while Rafael Martin pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 13th to earn his ninth save of the year.
After a day off on Thursday, the PawSox welcome Lehigh Valley to McCoy for a three-game weekend series. Right-hander Rick Porcello is expected to make an MLB rehab start for Pawtucket while the IronPigs counter with righty Alec Asher (1-0, 2.84).
Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
