Pawtucket, RI (August 19, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 2-1, Wednesday night in 13 innings in the final meeting between the two teams this season. Matt den Dekker homered in the top of the 13th to lift the Chiefs to the win.
Syracuse (56-70) grabbed the first run of the game in the third. Trea Turner doubled to start the inning. Three batters later, Turner scored on Matt den Dekker's RBI single to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Turner finished the game 4 for 4 with two singles and two doubles.
Pawtucket (48-78) couldn't solve Chiefs starter A.J. Cole all night. The right hander picked up a season-high eight strikeouts in seven shutout innings. Cole set down 12 PawSox in a row from the third until a hit-by-pitch in the seventh.
The PawSox finally tied the game in the eighth. Deven Marrero reached on an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Marrero advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on Allen Craig's RBI single to square the game at one.
The game stayed tied at one until the 13th inning. Den Dekker crushed a ball over the right-field wall off Pat Light to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. Rafael Martin came out of the Chiefs bullpen and picked up his 10th straight shutout inning to seal the win.
The Chiefs picked up victories in 12 of the final 13 meetings with the PawSox, and finished with a 14-5 record overall against Pawtucket for the season.
Syracuse is scheduled for its final off day of the season Thursday, before continuing the road trip Friday night in Buffalo. Taylor Hill is slated to start for the Chiefs opposite Scott Copeland for the Bisons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
