Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Rochester Red Wings staked starter Pat Dean to an early lead in a 6-0 win over the Buffalo Bisons Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field. With the win and series sweep of the Bisons, the Wings moved to within four games of first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

After an off day Thursday, the Red Wings head to Scranton for a three-game series with the RailRiders beginning Friday night. The final homestand of the 2015 season starts Thursday August 27, with two-time Cy Young Award winner Denny McLain and post-game fireworks. Complete promotion details below...

After not allowing a run in his win last week against Buffalo, Dean took the mound and pitched in a similar fashion. He came into today's game with a 3.10 ERA, the ninth-lowest in the International League.

Bisons starter Phillipe Aumont allowed three hits, one run and four walks in six innings against the Wings last week, and on Wednesday Aumont issued three walks with one out to load the bases. Aumont struck out Danny Ortiz - batting .462 with 19 RBI in bases loaded situations so far this this season - for the second out. But Danny Santana stroked a single that brought home two runs, staking Dean to a 2-0 lead.

Aumont walked another two batters in the second inning. Doug Bernier's steal of third base proved important when James Beresford lofted a foul fly down the left field line; Bernier tagged and scored, improving the Wings' lead to 3-0. Kennys Vargas added an RBI single to make it 4-0, a lead accomplished with only two hits.

After three back-to-back singles in the third inning, Dean found himself in a bases loaded, no outs situation. But Dean and the Wings got out of it without a Bison crossing the plate. These situations have not phased Dean in the past either; he came into today's game with a .000 batting average against him with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the third inning, Greg Burke took the mound in relief of Aumont. Bernier lined a two-out single to the right field gap against Burke, but the Wings were unable to keep anything going. Heading into the fifth inning, the Wings still led 4-0.

Aumont's line: two innings pitched, two hits, four earned runs, six walks, and two strikeouts. He threw 66 pitches, 29 for strikes.

Dean retired the Bisons in order in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth inning, maintaining the Wings' four-run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bernier laced his second hit of the game to right field against Bisons' reliever Aaron Loup. A balk by Loup moved Bernier to second base, then Carlos Paulino drew a walk. The Wings tacked on another run with Byron Buxton's double to center field, scoring Bernier. A bloop single by Beresford scored Paulino, extending their lead to 6-0. Buffalo reliever Ben Rowen was able to get out of a bases loaded jam to end a big inning for the Wings.

Dean returned to the mound in the seventh inning with minimal stir in the bullpen, surpassing teammate Taylor Rogers for innings pitched and making Dean the league leader. The leadoff batter was retired as Danny Ortiz made a leaping grab on the warning track in left field. With a ground out and a fly out, Dean worked yet another shutout inning.

In the ninth, Dean struck out Jon Berti, then Santana made a fine defensive play to throw out Andy Burns for the second out. Dean fanned Alex Hassan for the final out.

Dean earned his team-leading 10th win (10-10), with nine innings, six hits allowed with no walks, and six strikeouts. He threw 114 pitches, 86 for strikes.

Dean's shutout was his league-leading third of the season, and the Wings staff also leads the league with 16 shutouts. Dean is the first Red Wings pitcher with three shutouts in a season since Wings Hall of Famer Rick Krivda in 1997.

NOTES: Byron Buxton extended his hitting streak to 13 games. That ties James Beresford (April 22-May 9) for the longest streak of the season... The Red Wings swept a three-game series against Buffalo for the first time since July 2005.
