De Leon Delivers Two-Run Jack In 4-Run 7th, R'Dogs Win First Series Of 2011

Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs scored six times in their final three at-bats to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the Rome Braves, 8-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 4,752 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston moved back to .500 at 6-6 in taking the series, while Rome fell to 4-8.

Kelvin De Leon's skyscraping two-run home run accentuated a four-run seventh inning that blew the game open for Charleston and made a winner of Danny Burawa (1-1) for the first time in his professional career. The St. John's product penned 2.1 scoreless innings of relief while yielding only two hits and notching a strikeout.

Rome appeared poised to strike in the first inning for the third consecutive night when they put runners at second and third with nobody out, but Charleston starter Nik Turley stemmed the tide. The 6-7 southpaw struck out two in a row and then induced a warning track fly out from Edward Salcedo, the Braves leading hitter, to escape the jam unscathed.

Turley plunked Jace Whitmer with a 0-2 pitch to lead to the game's first run in the second. Kyle Rose executed a hit and run to stroke a single to right field and advance Whitmer to third base in front of Matt Lipka, who produced a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout.

Braves' starter Caleb Brewer no-hit the RiverDogs through the first three innings, retiring eight in a row after Slade Heathcott walked leading off the game. Brewer hit a roadblock in the fourth, though, as Charleston grabbed a 2-1 advantage.

Heathcott got the rally started when he was hit by a pitch, and the RiverDogs loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit as Anderson Feliz and Ramon Flores worked consecutive walks. One out later, Rob Segedin punched a run-scoring single to right-centerfield to drive in Heatchott and square the score, 1-1. De Leon then pushed Charleston in front with a five-pitch walk to plate Feliz.

Barrett Kleinknecht bashed his second home run in as many nights to knot the tally at 2-2 in the fifth, drilling a Turley offering well beyond the left field fence for his third jack of the season.

Turley was sharp before giving way to Burawa with two outs in the sixth, lasting a season-best 5.2 innings while allowing the two runs on seven hits and two walks, setting down six Braves on strikes in the process.

Charleston took the lead back with an unearned run in the sixth off Rome reliever Blaine Sims (0-2). J.R. Murphy and Segedin started the inning with back-to-back singles, and Murphy crossed to third before scoring a two-out run for a 3-2 cushion, when Salcedo bobbled a Kelvin Castro grounder and then made an errant throw past the reach of the first baseman Kleinknecht.

De Leon's majestic smash placed an exclamation point on the four-run seventh as the RiverDogs laid claim to a demanding 7-2 lead. Feliz and Flores delivered a pair of singles to set the stage for Murphy, who grounded a run scoring single to left. Segedin stepped into the box a batter later and brought home Flores with an RBI groundout before De Leon lofted a long drive to left off Sims for his second home run of the year.

Feliz atoned for the final 8-2 margin in the eighth, one-hopping the left-centerfield wall with an opposite field double to chase home Kelvin Castro.

The RiverDogs start an extended five-game series with the Upstate rival Greenville Drive tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19, at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Mikey O'Brien (0-1, 2.53 ERA) will get the ball versus Greenville righty Anthony Ranaudo (1-0, 0.00), the Red Sox second first round pick in the 2010 Draft.
