Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws bats never woke up Monday morning as they dropped the final game of their 4 games series against the Hagerstown Suns 1-0. First pitch was at 10:35 a.m. and neither team's bats were ready for the early wake-up call. Hagerstown managed just 2 hits on the day, and the BlueClaws doubled that output with just 4 of their own. Both Starting Pitchers were spectacular allowing just 2 hits over 11 innings of work combined between the two. Hagerstown Starting Pitcher Cameron Selik struck out 11 BlueClaws hitters in just 5 innings of work, and Suns pitching combined to strike out 18 on the day.
In the end, it was Brett Newsome's Sacrifice Fly off Lakewood RP Eric Pettis (0-1) to Center that scored the SS Jason Martinson in the bottom of the 9th inning that proved to be the difference as Hagerstown walked-off a winner 1-0. Martinson had led off the inning with a single, stole 2nd, and moved to third on an error by the SS Edgar Duran. Newsome entered the game for Hagerstown as a substitute in place of Bryce Harper who left the game earlier. No word yet on the reason for Harper leaving the game.
The bright spot of the day for Lakewood was the fantastic performance turned in by SP Ervis Manzanillo. The lefty bounced back after being rocked by Greensboro last Wednesday to pitch a gem today. He went 6 shutout innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 6. RHP Garret Claypool pitched a perfect 7th inning, and RHP Eric Pettis picked up the loss after allowing the run on the sacrifice fly with 2 outs in the 9th inning.
Next up for the BlueClaws is a 5 game series in Asheville, NC against the Asheville Tourists beginning Tuesday. It will be LHP Mario Hollands (1-1) making his 3rd start of the season for Lakewood, and he will be opposed by RHP Albert Campos (1-1). First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
