Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - A ninth-inning sacrifice fly broke open a game that had been tied at five apiece since the fifth inning as the West Virginia Power picked up a 6-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Monday night. The Power became the third straight team to take three of four from the Jackets to open the 2011 season.

Matt Curry led off the ninth with a double off Jacob Dunnington (1-1). He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Justin Howard's sacrifice fly to give the Power their second lead of the night.

The GreenJackets had chances to break the tie against the West Virginia bullpen, leaving two stranded runners in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Brooks Pounders retired the side in order though in the eighth for West Virginia before handing things over to Casey Sadler, who picked up his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth.

For just the third time all year, the GreenJackets picked up the first lead of the game with a Raynor Campbell solo home run in the first. The Power tied the game a half inning later when Kevin Mort drew a bases loaded walk in what would set the tone for this game as a see-saw battle.

In the Augusta fourth inning, the GreenJackets got three hits on four runs. Adam Duvall and Josh Mazzola hit back-to-back doubles to break the 1-1 tie and a Sundrendy Windster sacrifice fly put another run on the board. The third run of the inning came when Ryan Scoma scored as the back half of a daring double steal to give the GreenJackets a 4-1 edge.

Right away though, Justin Schumer found trouble in the top of the fifth. With two on and no one out, Matt Curry doubled to bring home a pair. Eric Avila promptly singled to center to score both remaining runners to tie the game briefly at four-all. Avila moved to second on an error and traded places with Howard, whose double gave the Power their first lead of the night at 5-4. That would be a short-lived lead, however, as Raynor Campbell - as part of a three-hit night - doubled home the equalizer to tie the game at five.

Schumer allowed five runs on eight hits in the no decision, walking four and striking out three. Pounders (2-0) picked up his second win of the series with a perfect eighth inning for the Power.

The GreenJackets welcome the Delmarva Shorebirds to town on Tuesday night to open a five-game series. Augusta sends Mario Rodriguez (0-0) to the mound to face Tim Adleman (1-1). First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
