Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (11-7) blanked the Buffalo Bisons (11-7) for no runs and six hits en-route to a 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon. Worcester starter Daniel Gossett dominated in six innings, striking out five and walking just two. Catcher Jett Bandy powered the offense, reaching base three times and driving in two runs.
Gossett, coming off a four-run, seven-hit outing at the beginning of this series, flipped the script on Sunday. In his fourth start of the season, he tossed six shutout frames and set down eight batters in a row between the third and fifth innings. Earning the victory and throwing 67 of 100 pitches for strikes, today marked Gossett's first scoreless outing of the year.
John Schreiber took over for Gossett in the seventh, while Brandon Brennan handled the eighth. Brandon Workman came in for the save and did just that.
After a scoreless first inning, the WooSox went up in the second thanks to a Jett Bandy RBI single that snuck through the infield. Jonathan Araúz reached on a leadoff walk, and stole second in the next at-bat. A few pitches later, he stood on third after a wild pitch. Jett Bandy brought him home for his second RBI of the season.
It did not take long for Bandy to record his third RBI. Just two innings later, Cesar Puello started the action by reaching second on a throwing error. He swiped third base soon after, with his jump not even warranting a throw. And to mirror the second inning, Bandy cleaned up the bases with another RBI single, doubling the WooSox lead to 2-0.
Worcester added another run in the fifth, kick-started by a leadoff double from the rehabbing Christian Arroyo, once again playing second base. Two batters later, Yairo Munoz, making his second start of the season at first base, launched a double of his own into the right field corner, plating Arroyo and extending the lead to 3-0.
Tate Matheny, making just his sixth appearance for the WooSox, added some insurance in the eighth, driving in his third RBI of the season. Right-fielder Cesar Puello reached on a leadoff single. After a stolen base and a throwing error, a Matheny single brought Puello in from third base and made it 4-0 Worcester, where the score would remain.
Worcester's five stolen bases today mark the most swipes in a game for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate since the 2015 season. Cesar Puello stole two bags, while Jeter Downs, Tate Matheny, and Jonathan Araúz all added one of their own.
After a day off on Monday, the WooSox will hit the road for the first time in two weeks, heading to Allentown, PA for a six-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate. The series begins this Tuesday at 7:05 p.m, with radio coverage starting live at 6:15 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. Lehigh Valley's David Parkinson will face Worcester's Stephen Gonsalves (1-1, 5.02 ERA).
