Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads and Greenville Drive battled back and forth through the first seven innings, until the Drive rallied for four runs in the eighth to take the 7-4 win before 3,232 at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday Night. With the loss, Hickory drops to two games behind the Lakewood BlueClaws for 1st in the Northern Division with just two games remaining in the half.
The Drive (35-33) capitalized on three errors by the Crawdads defense in the top of the first, scoring one run for an early, 1-0 advantage. However, with runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the third, CF Ed Koncel tied the game at one with an RBI bloop single to center.
HIckory (39-29) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out in the inning, 1B Mike Ortiz walked and LF Cristian Santana singled before Greenville starter Kendal Volz uncorked a wild pitch followed by a throwing error by C Dan Butler, allowing Ortiz to score from second.
The Drive answered right back with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Crawdads responded with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh, putting the 'Dads ahead once again, 4-3.
After recording the first out of the eighth inning, Hickory All-Star starter LHP Robbie Ross was replaced by reliever RHP Tyler Tufts. After recording a quick second out, DH Chris McGuiness got a hold of a Tufts fastball for a homerun to tie the game at four. Greenville followed the McGuiness blast with three consecutive singles to score three more runs, accounting for the 7-4 Greenville win.
Ross pitched 7.1 solid innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Tufts (0-2, 6.00 ERA) took the loss for Hickory, surrendering four runs (one earned) on five hits in a third of an inning. LHP Joseph Ortiz and RHP Hector Nelo dealt the final 1.1 scoreless innings for the Crawdads. Reliever RHP Jeremiah Bayer (3-1, 4.86 ERA) recorded the win for the Drive.
