Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (34-34) got a strong start from Mitchell Clegg and a season-high 23 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over the West Virginia Power (31-37) on Friday.

Eury Perez and Justin Cuevas opened the scoring for the Suns in the second inning with back-to-back doubles, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead.

The offense really got clicking in the third inning as Francisco Soriano led off with a triple to right field and was followed by Justin Bloxom who tripled to center, driving in Soriano.

Hagerstown was not finished there, as two batters later Destin Hood hit his second home run of the season, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Suns got back to it in the fourth inning, as Jeff Kobernus singled, stole second and scored on a single by Bloxom before JP Ramirez hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-0.

On the very next pitch, Power reliever Gabriel Alvarado hit Hood in the head with a fastball, walked towards Hood and was ejected from the game. Both benches and bullpens emptied, but nothing more than words were exchanged in the confrontation.

Meanwhile, Suns starter Mitchell Clegg (8-0) was very impressive. Clegg pitched five scoreless innings, with just one hit and three strikeouts to earn the victory.

After West Virginia scored two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh off reliever Wanel Vasquez, Hagerstown broke the game open with a five-run, seven-hit eighth inning. The Suns also tacked on a single run in the ninth to bring the final tally to 13-3.

Kobernus and Bloxom both had four-hit games, while Ramirez, Brett Newsome and Perez each had three hits on the day.

Rob Wort and Shane Erb combined to finish the final two and two thirds innings without allowing a run for Hagerstown.

The Suns and Power will play game three of their four-game series at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
