Cavan's Slam Leaves No Doubt; Jackets Win 7-1

Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - As it turned out, the Augusta GreenJackets wouldn't need the runs provided by Ryan Cavan's seventh inning grand slam nearly as badly as they needed the jolt of energy provided by the round-tripper. They'll be happy with both as the GreenJackets scored five times in the seventh en route to a 7-1 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday night.
Cavan's grand slam came on just his third home run of the year and was the team's first grand slam this season. The seventh inning rally started with Daniel Cook's bases loaded single prior to the grand slam that took Augusta's lead to 3-1. Cavan's four-run dinger came on a 3-2 pitch from reliever Taylor Whitenton.
Augusta claimed the lead in the second inning on a Hector Sanchez RBI single to go up a run. The Jackets added to that lead on a Chris Dominguez run-scoring single - his second hit of the day - as Augusta provided starter Jorge Bucardo with a 2-0 lead.
Bucardo (7-2) didn't have his best stuff on Friday night, striking out only two and allowing nine hits and a walk through six innings. He earned his fifth straight win through guts and determination, escaping a jam in the second by turning a comebacker into a double play ball and getting an unusual outfield assist to help alleviate a three-hit Savannah fifth inning.
Despite the multiple Savannah baserunners, the only run scored off Bucardo came on a Juan Lagares sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Sand Gnats left nine runners on the basepaths in the game.
Collin McHugh (2-5) took the loss for the Gnats, allowing two runs on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Ryan Verdugo, Mitch Lively and Jose Casilla allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to preserve the win for Bucardo.
As a result of the win, Augusta will enter the penultimate day of the first half a game behind the Sand Gnats for the division lead. Needing to win twice to win the division title, the GreenJackets send Andy Reichard (0-0, 0.00) to the mound to face Brandon Moore (3-4, 2.25). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
Fans can purchase seats to all home games by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
