
D-Fenders Fall Short vs. Austin

EL SEGUNDO - The D-Fenders fell to the Austin Spurs 101-98 tonight in El Segundo.
Vander Blue scored a season-high 27 points, while recording seven rebounds for the D-Fenders (6-5). Justin Harper also recorded a season high with 23 points (7/12 FGA). Malcolm Thomas (14 points, seven rebounds, six assists), Jamaal Franklin (12 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Michael Frazier (11 points) all scored in double-figures for Los Angeles.
Orlando Johnson was the difference for Austin (8-2), scoring 28 points. Cady Lalanne (15 points), Jarell Eddie (14 points, eight rebounds), Deshaun Thomas (13 points, seven rebounds, six assists), Keifer Sykes (11 points) and Demetri McCamey (10 points) all reached double-digits for Austin.
Both teams struggled early, with the Spurs up 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. Things picked up in the second, as the D-Fenders outscored the Spurs 31-27 behind eight points from Franklin. Eddie had 11 points in the quarter for Austin. Los Angeles took a 51-48 lead into the halftime break, Harper the lone D-Fender in double-digits with 12 points.
The third quarter was slow for Los Angeles, as the Spurs outscored the D-Fenders 31-21. Blue scored 13 points in the quarter to lead Los Angeles. The D-Fenders trailed 79-72 after three. Los Angeles made a run in the fourth quarter, with Blue trying to force overtime with a last second shot, but it would fall short, leaving the D-Fenders with a 101-98 defeat.
The D-Fenders shot .468, while Austin finished at .436. Austin edged Los Angeles in rebounds (47-32) and second chance points (25-10).
Los Angeles has a rematch with the Spurs on Sunday at 5:00pm PT in El Segundo.
