Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
About Saturday Night vs. Wheeling: The Cincinnati Cyclones got out to a thrilling start for the 2012-13 season with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Nailers in front of 5,365 at U.S. Bank Arena. Cincinnati goalie Brian Foster stopped all four shootout attempts by the Nailers while team captain Mathieu Aubin was able to find space to put the game winner past Nailers net minder Patrick Killeen.
SHOTS FROM THE POINT:
The Returners: Cincinnati has plenty of familiar faces on the 2012-13 roster. A total of 12 players from last year's squad are back for another season - including three of their top four point-getters: Taylor Aronson, Brian O'Hanley, Maury Edwards, Mathieu Aubin, Garrett Wilson, David MacDonald, Dan Eves, Mike Liambas, Mike Pelech, Chris Reed, Brian Foster, and Anthony Luciani.
Home=Winning: If this season is anything like the last, Cincinnati is going to be a tough team to beat at U.S. Bank Arena. In 2011-12, they garnered the second most home points of any team in the league (55) by earning a 26-7-0-3 record. So far, they're 1-for-1.
Killing Spree: Another strong point for the Cyclones in 2011-12 was their penalty kill. They finished sixth in the ECHL with an 84% kill rate - extinguishing 237 goals on 282 chances. On home ice, they were even more successful; at U.S. Bank Arena they held the third-best home penalty-kill rate in the league - clicking at 86.5%. On Saturday, they killed off 4-of-5 Wheeling power plays.
Striking Early Counts: Getting an early advantage proved to be especially important for the Cyclones last year. When scoring the game's first goal, Cincinnati was 17-5-1-3. That record was magnified even more on home ice, where they went 12-2-0-0 in such situations.
