Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators opened the 2012-13 season with a 4-3 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night. Despite not picking up a point over the weekend, Gwinnett does not sit in last place as Greenville has posted an 0-2-0 record this season. Florida sits in first with 4 points and a perfect 2-0-0 record to lead the South Division.

Ontario Preview: Last season the Reign won the Pacific Division Championship title and was ranked second in the Western Conference. The Reign opened up the 2012-13 season with a 4-0 loss to the Stockton Thunder on Friday night. This will be the first time Gwinnett will face Ontario in team history.

Saturday, 10/20: Game vs. Greenville - @7:05 p.m.

Greenville Preview: The Road Warriors opened this season with a 3-1 loss to the Trenton Titans on Friday. Last time the Gladiators met the Road Warriors was a 4-2 win in a preseason game two weeks ago. Gwinnett will meet the Road Warriors 12 times this season.

Saturday, October 13th: South Carolina 4, Gwinnett 3 - L

"ªThe South Carolina Stingrays beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 in Game 1 of the 2012-13 regular season. Forward Tyler McNeely led the Stingrays to victory by scoring the game winning goal in the third period. Rookie goalie Adam Morrison stopped 35 shots for the Stingrays and picked up his first professional win.

News & Notes:

Openers: The Gladiators dropped the season opener to the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 on Saturday night as Gwinnett started the season on the road. In-all time team history, the organization has posted a ecord of 9-6-1 in the season openers. Of the 16 games, the organization has posted a 5-4-0 record on the road in season openers.

Rookies: The Gladiators have seven rookies to open the season which include Mike Lee, Sean Duddy, Maxime Villemaire, Justin Weller, Chiristian Ouellet, Louis Domingue, and Doug Jones. Lee, Domingue and Weller are all assigned to the Gladiators from the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL.

Team Leaders: Veteran forward Andy Brandt was named Team Captain this season. He earned 43 points in 68 games and also skated in four games with the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL. Also returning to the Gladiators is Joey Haddad who will serve as an assistant captain. He notched 35 points in 43 games last season with Gwinnett. Newcomer Ryan Donald will also serve as an assistant captain this season. Last year with Florida, Donald earned 17 points in 50 games as he helped the Everblades to the Kelly Cup.

Power Play: The Gladiators went one-for-four on the power play on opening night pushing them to eighth in the ECHL. Last season they were ranked 14th with 53 goals on 318 power play chances in 72 games.

Upcoming Events:

Opening Night: The Gladiators will be celebrating their South Division Championship with a banner raising ceremony prior to the home opener on Friday, October 19th when Gwinnett hosts Ontario at 7:35 p.m.

Team Calendars: The first 2,000 fans to the Gladiators game on Saturday, October 20th will receive a Gladiators Team Calendar couretsy of AT&T Yellow Pages, Kroger, WSB AM/FM and the Gwinnett Daily Post. The 10th Anniversday Calendar features the Gladiators all time ECHL Award Winners.

The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
