Cyclones Take 5-1 Win at Elmira For Seventh Straight Win

December 29, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

ELMIRA, New York - The Cincinnati Cyclones tied their club record for consecutive wins with their seventh straight in a 5-1 win over Elmira on Saturday night. Five different Cyclones scored goals, with a pair of fights and six players ejected--including both goaltender--in the third period.

The Cyclones opened the scoring 3:55 into the first period, when Billy Irish-Baker collected his fifth goal of the season. Irish-Baker took a feed from Andrew Martin and Avery Wilson to finish the score-which came just two seconds after Cincinnati's first power play of the night expired. It was the ECHL-leading 22nd time this season that Cincinnati scored the first goal of a game.

Elmira leveled the scores in the second period at 15:44 when Benoit Doucet collected his ninth goal of the season. Doucet fired a shot drifting to his left in the high slot over the glove hand of Cedrick Desjardins. Chaz Johnson and Brett Pilkington added the assists. Cincinnati dominated the shots on goal in the frame-22-5, but yielded the only score of the period.

The third period was one of the most frantic finishes in club history, as Cincinnati netted four goals to blow the game open. Scott Reynolds netted a shorthanded goal 34 seconds into the frame to give the Cyclones a 2-1 edge.

Jean-Michel Daoust scored at 12:48, but it was disallowed by referee Ghislain Hebert, after a consultation with the goal judge-which proved to be the spark the team needed to claim its seventh straight win.

Less than a minute later, at 13:45, Cory Urquhart picked up his fourth goal of the season to give the club a two goal cushion. Less than a minute after that-Daoust netted one that counted-his 24th of the year at 14:22.

A melee ensued shortly after that saw more than 80 penalty minutes handed out-including the ejection of six players and both goaltenders.

With a power play goal at 16:51, Conrad Martin closed out the scoring with his second goal of the year.

Cincinnati is now 18-3-2 in its last 23 games. Cincinnati is 23-6-2 overall and Elmira is 21-7-3.

The Cyclones are now 17 games above .500 for the first time in team history. The club was 16 games over .500 on March 19, 1995-when the team was located in Louisville-and had a 38-22-7 mark. The 23 wins are the most the team has ever had prior to the All-Star break and the seven game win streak ties the team record (Dec. 22, 1995 through Jan. 5, 1996).

The Cyclones close out the 2007 calendar year-and finish off their six-game road trip-Monday with a 5pm game at Trenton. That game will be carried on both the club's website (www.cycloneshockey.com) and on 96 Rock.

The Cyclones are next at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, January 4 when Reading comes to town for the start of NASCAR Weekend. Matt Kenseth will be the special guest on Saturday, January 5. Both games start at 7:30pm.

Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
