READING, PA - Jason Smith didn't look like he hadn't seen the ice in two weeks. The rookie netminder made one big save after another, stopping 36 shots in all to deliver the Devils to a 2-1 shootout win against the Reading Royals.

A game that featured 94 penalty minutes started out with a quiet first period, highlighted by a Joe Rooney goal 15:49 in. The Boston College alum took a feed from Colin Pepperall along the top goal line, firing a low shot through Reading netminder Jon Quick's legs. Ryan Gunderson was also credited with an assist on the play.

The chippy play began in the second period, when four separate altercations broke out, including three simultaneously. Six different players received fighting majors or misconduct penalties forcing both teams to play with shortened rosters.

Smith and the Devils fought to keep the 1-0 lead til 14:09 in the third, when Brock Hooton fired home a one-timer after the Devils killed off a five-on-three situation.

A scoreless overtime would result in the shootout, where Rooney, Matt Rogers, and Trevor Kell fired wristers into the net. Kell received the first star for his game-winning tally.

Pepperall increased his point streak to six games; he has scored ten points (2g, 8a) in that span.

The Trenton Devils return to the capitol city and Sovereign Bank Arena to face the Cincinnati Cyclones on New Year's Eve, December 31st at 5:00pm. Tune into WBCB 1490 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
