Royals Pull Out A Point In Shootout Loss To Trenton, 2-1

December 29, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (17-10-3=37, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL, playing with a short and somewhat patch-worked line-up, scored a third period power play goal to tie the game at one and get to a shootout, where the Trenton Devils won, 2-1, at the Sovereign Center. The Devils scored a power play goal in the first period and held a one goal lead for almost forty-minutes before Reading broke up the shutout bid of goaltender Jason Smith (3-8-1; 36/37; 3/4 shootout) with just 5:51 remaining in regulation. Goaltender Jon Quick (9-6-3; 30/31 1/4 shootout) kept the Royals, who played most of the game with just twelve skaters, afloat with several spectacular stops at critical moments, but his lost for the first time in a shootout for Reading.

Trenton struck first 15:49 into the game on their second power play chance of the night. Colin Pepperall settled on the right half-way and fed Joe Rooney along the goal line at the right side of the net. Rooney, a left shot, attacked the net and fired a sharp angle shot that slipped through Quick for his sixth goal of the season. The two teams traded chances-and the two goaltenders traded stops (several of which attained highlight reel level)-until late in the third when the Royals tied the game. While on the power play, Chris Bala, a veteran part-timer playing in just his fourth game with the team this season, took control at the right point. Bala fed Dany Roussin along the goal line on the right wing side, and Roussin, in turn, slipped a brilliant pass through the crease to the back door where Brock Hooton buried his one-timer at the 14:09 mark of the third for his tenth goal of the year. The two teams went through the remainder of regulation-and overtime-without resolution. In the shootout, the Devils got exceptional shots from Matt Rogers, Rooney and Trevor Kell, while the Royals were only able to solve Smith once (by Brett Hemingway). For Reading, this marked the first shootout loss of the season in three tries. The Royals have a record of 4-3 in games that have ended regulation time in a tie (2-2 in overtime; 2-1 in shootout).

The Royals are off until Wednesday, January 2 (6:35 pm) when the organization will honor the Governor Mifflin High School football team as we celebrate our pride in Berks County at the Sovereign Center. The game night broadcast on Wednesday will begin at 6:05 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
