Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers allowed four goals in the first period and were unable to work from behind against the South Carolina Stingrays losing by a score of 5-2.

It took just over one minute for the Stingrays to get on the scoreboard after Matt Scherer directed a cross crease pass through the legs of Checkers netminder, Curtis Darling at 1:05. South Carolina would follow up with a power play goal shortly after when Trent Campbell found a loose puck in the Checkers zone and shot it past a sprawling Darling at 2:54 bringing the game to a 2-0 Stingrays advantage. The Stingrays would go up 3-0 and it would be Campbell again. This time, he took several swipes at the puck and scored on his third rebound at 6:21 spelling the end of the night for Darling as Matt Zaba would come in to replace him. As the period progressed, Paul Mcllveen would carry into the Checkers zone, cut the middle and blast a shot over the glove of Zaba giving the Stingrays a 4-0 lead at 14:18.

In the second period, the Stingrays would add to their robust lead on the power play after Matt Zaba stopped a shot from Campbell but gave up the rebound to Chris Chaput who slammed it in for a 5-0 advantage at 13:13. Charlotte would finally score when a point shot from Steve Burgess beat Stingrays goalie, Josh Johnson at 13:49 bringing the game to a 5-1 score in favor of South Carolina.

In the final period, Blake Bellefeiulle would receive a great pass from Chris Capraro in the slot and take a wrist shot that fooled Johnson at 16:28. It wasn't enough for the Checkers to bridge the gap and they would lose, 5-2.

Notes: Zaba stopped 14 of 16 shots while Johnson turned aside 22 of 24...Darling was pulled after allowing three goals on five shots...The Checkers were unable to capitalize on their eight power play opportunities while the Stingrays scored twice on seven attempts.
