Inferno take Lynx to Shootout

Columbia Inferno News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Columbia Inferno (12-13-4-3, 31 points) gained a point in the standings Saturday night as they fell to the Augusta Lynx (17-11-0-3, 37 points) 3-2 in a shootout.
Lynx center Louis Goulet gave Augusta a 1-0 lead a minute into the first period when he beat Jeff Jakaitis for his seventh goal of the year. Defenseman Will Bodine stretched the Augusta lead to 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the first when his third of the year eluded Jakaitis.
Columbia cut the lead in half when center Jeff Miles scored his 13th of the year about eight minutes into the second period, with assists to Peter Tsimikalis and Anthony Battaglia. Miles tied the game 2-2 when he netted his second of the night 11:12 into the second period. Reid Cashman and Owen Fussey notched the assists when Miles' power play goal beat Lynx goalie Bobby Goepfert.
Neither team could score in the third period or overtime, requiring a shootout to settle the game. Goepfert and Jakaitis were both outstanding in the competition, as each stoned their first nine shooters, requiring 10 rounds of shooters to settle the game. Finally, after the first 19 total shooters were unsuccessful, Augusta defenseman Nick Toneys scored on Jakaitis to beat the Inferno 3-2 in overtime.
Goepfert stopped 29 of 31 shots, while Jakaitis stopped 38 of 40.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Wednesday, Jan. 2 to host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 1:05 p.m. for New 92 FM's Call In Sick Day.
