Three Checkers Players Called Up

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League have recalled forward, Jordan Owens. Also, the Charlotte Checkers have loaned defenseman, Matt Waddell and forward, Ryan Murphy to the Wolf Pack.

Owens, 6-foot-1, 181 pounds, has played in 20 games for the Checkers this season picking up three goals and seven assists for 10 points with 28 penalty minutes. The Toronto, Ontario born winger started his professional career with a brief stint for the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League last year playing in two games (no points). He began this year with Hartford and suited up for six games tallying one goal and two assists for three points.

Waddell, 6-foot-1, 205 pound product of Ohio State University has dressed in 19 games for the Checkers this season totaling two goals, four assists for six points with 25 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, he was loaned to the Wolf Pack and dressed in seven games but didn't register a point.

Murphy, 5-foot-11, 185-pound, has dressed in 11 games with the Checkers this season scoring one goal and six assists for seven points with four penalty minutes. This will mark his second stint with Hartford this year after he previously dressed in seven games (zero points). Murphy was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced that the team has signed forwards Dallas Steward and Matt Pierce.

Steward, 5-foot-6, 180 pounds, played the two previous seasons with the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Last year, he totaled 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) in 41 games with 50 penalty minutes. He hails from Chippewa Falls, WI and is an alumnus of the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

Pierce, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, played three seasons for Mercyhurst College of the NCAA. The native of Pakenham, Ontario dressed in 18 games with Mercyhurst this season garnering two goals, four assists for six points.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Dec. 29 against the South Carolina Stingrays. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
