Cyclones Take 4-2 Triumph In Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - Cincinnati Cyclones forwards Mathieu Aubin and Jason Deitsch each scored a goal and added an assist in a 4-2 win over Johnstown on Wednesday night. The triumph gives Cincinnati a three game to none edge in the North Division semifinals.best of seven series. Goaltender Maxime Daigneault stopped 39 shots in taking the victory.

There was no scoring in the first period but Johnstown had two solid scoring opportunities, including a partial breakaway from forward Mike Sgroi that was turned aside by Cyclones netminder Max Daigneault. Johnstown had three power play chances in the opening period and outshot Cincinnati, 13-8, in the frame.

Cincinnati got a pair of goals in the second period as Matt Syroczynski netted his second of the Kelly Cup playoffs at 5:27, re-directing a pass from T.J. McElroy on the left wing side. Olivier Latendresse added the other assist on that goal. In the Cyclones next man-advantage situation, Cincinnati native Jason Deitsch registered his first postseason goal at 11:15 from Mathieu Aubin and Barret Ehgoetz. Deitsch teed up the pass in the slot to light the lamp. Both power play goals were set up by hustle plays from Cincinnati players. Billy Irish-Baker drew the first power play chance by keeping the puck bottled up in the Johnstown zone to cause a penalty. Mathieu Aubin endured a boarding call in his own zone to set up the second man-advantage chance.

Johnstown closed the deficit to one, at 2-1, when Alexandre Imbeault netted his third postseason goal on the power play at 13:15. Aubin restored the two goal edge at 16:36, finishing off a two-on-one rush from Deitsch. An empty net goal from Thomas Beauregard with 28 seconds remaining gave Cincinnati its final goal and Imbeautl finished the scoring with his second tally of the night and fourth of the Kelly Cup playoffs with 11 seconds to go.

This was the third game of the best-of-seven North Division semifinals. The Cyclones (55-12-5) were the North Division, American Conference and Brabham Cup (best overall ECHL regular season record) champions. Johnstown (36-30-6), which is seeded fourth, upended fifth-seeded Dayton in a two game sweep last week to advance to this round. The fourth contest will be played tomorrow night-Wednesday, April 16-at the Cambria County War Memorial at 7pm. The game will be carried on 96 Rock (96.5 FM), as well as on www.cycloneshockey.com.

The winner of this semifinals series will meet the winner of the Elmira vs. Reading series that also began last week. Reading leads the series, two games to one, following a 3-2 win tonight.
