April 15, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
For the second straight game, the Augusta Lynx were one goal away from advancing to the South Division Semi-Finals, but the South Carolina Stingrays managed to win on the verge of elimination. In Game #4 on Tuesday night, it was a 3-2 double overtime win for the Stingrays as Trent Campbell played the hero with a goal midway through the second overtime period to send the series to a fifth and deciding game on Wednesday night in Charleston.
For the fourth straight game, the Lynx struggled to get off to a good start. The Stingrays came out flying and took an early lead less than two minutes into the game with a goal from Marty Guerin, who converted off a Lynx turnover in their defensive zone. The momentum shift towards the Lynx late in the 1st period as a blocked shot by #11 Matt Christie led to a pass from #20 Matt Auffrey who found a streaking #7 Travis Fuller who raced in on a breakaway with time running out. As 'Rays goaltender Josh Johnson came out a slid at the play, Fuller pulled the puck around him and fired a shot into the open net with .2 seconds remaining in the period.
The Lynx came out in the 2nd period with more momentum as Christie found Auffrey in the middle of the slot and from his knees, beat Johnson up high from the slot for the first Lynx lead of the game. In the 3rd period, the 'Rays would tie the game at 2-2 as Marty Geurin skated around three Lynx players and beat Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert to the blocker side for his second goal of the game.
The first overtime was dominated by the Stingrays as they outshot the Lynx 10-2, but Goepfert was very good between the pipes with several acrobatic saves.
In the second overtime, a seemingly harmless one on one with Campbell racing in from the left wing, got a shot off that Goepfert got a piece of with the blocker, but not enough as the puck trickled in behind him for the game-winner. The Stingrays outshot the Lynx 43-29 in a game that took almost three and a half hours to play. With the series now tied 2-2, the fifth a final game will be played on Wednesday, April 16th at 7:05pm at the North Charleston Colesium. The winner advances to the South Division Semi-Finals, the loser will see their season end.
