Cyclones Run Unbeaten Streak To Six Games

November 19, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones play three important divisional games this week, looking to improve their unbeaten streak beyond six games (5-0-1). All three contests will be played at U.S. Bank Arena, with the first coming tomorrow night (Nov. 20) in a rescheduled game with Wheeling. Following a break for Thanksgiving, the Cyclones welcome Dayton in for games Friday and Saturday night.

BACK WHERE WE STARTED: The Cyclones begin the week as leaders of the North Division, a position they held for 90 days a year ago. Cincinnati has been in the top spot for seven days already and is guaranteed of holding the spot at least until Friday (another four days). Last season, the club did not move into the top spot until Dec. 30.

PLENTY AT STAKE TUESDAY NIGHT...: Not only would a Tuesday win over Wheeling extend the Cyclones unbeaten streak to seven games--tying a club record--but it would also give Cincinnati sole possession of the top spot in the American Conference all by itself. The club has never held the conference lead this late in a season.

WEEK IN REWIND: Cincinnati went 3-0 last week, starting with a 5-1 beating of Dayton on Tuesday. David Desharnais paced the attack with a three point night, as five different Cyclones players scored goals. Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 33 shots. Wednesday night, it was another 5-1 win this time over Trenton. Again, five different goal scorers were led by Desharnais and Jean-Michel Daoust, who each had two point games. Sunday afternoon, Daoust had a two goal effort in a 5-4 win at Dayton, which saw his linemates--Desharnais and Matt Syroczynski each have three point games.

DAOUST TO THE RESCUE!: Last week, Cyclones right wing Jean-Michel Daoust had a week to remember. Daoust collected four goals, three assists and was +7 in the three games played. Jean-Michel added a game wininng goal and a pair of game winning assists as well. Daoust has goals in each of the last six games, equaling the ECHL season-long and the team record is seven games--set by Nick Bootland from March 6-23, 2002.

SPEAKING OF BOOTLAND AND SCORING STREAKS...: Daoust is also chasing Nick Bootland in another goal scoring area. Bootland, who now plays with Kalamazoo (IHL), had a seven-game goal scoring streak from Nov. 3-16 of this season--the longest of any player in North American professional hockey. Daoust could tie that season-long with a goal Tuesday night.

EHGOETZ STREAKING AS WELL: Cyclones center Barret Ehgoetz is usually noted for his defensive work, but has put together a scoring streak of his own. Ehgoetz has a four-game point streak, highlighted by two goals and three assists for five points. It was a solid defensive effort from Barret that netted his goal Sunday to extend the streak. In the final seconds of the second period on Sunday, Ehgoetz laid his stick in a Dayton passing lane on the forecheck and intercepted a pass that tied the game at 4-4 going into the third period.

DESHARNAIS HAD WEEK TO REMEMBER: Rookie David Desharnais had a solid three games last week as well. The center, on assignment from the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL), collected three goals and five assists for eight points and was +7. Desharnais is second among rookies in scoring with 17 points on six goals and eleven assists. David is tied for the ECHL lead in plus/minus at +12.

ALL CHUCK DOES IS WIN...: Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber has a 46-32-7 record (.582 winning percentage), the best in team history. Only Warren Young (100 wins) has claimed more victories than Weber and it took him three complete seasons to accomplish the feat. That winning percentage is the best of any coach in the North Division since the start of last season.

GOALIES ARE GOOD: The Cyclones goaltending tandem of Cedrick Desjardins and Dov Grumet-Morris rank second in the ECHL in goals against average at 2.23. Desjardins ranks fifth individually at 2.16, while Grumet-Morris is seventh at 2.29. Cedrick is also tied for the league lead in shutouts with two (Glenn Fisher of Stockton also has two).

DEFENSE RISES: In addition to ranking second in the ECHL in goals against average, the Cyclones also lead the league in fewest shots allowed. Cincinnati is surrendering 25.46 shots per game. The club has permitted just 108 shots in the third period of games this season, an average of 7.92 per games--third-fewest in the league. The Cyclones have allowed 107 first period shots, third-fewest in the league as well.

...BUT IF YOU OUTSCORE THEM, WHO CARES?: The Cincinnati offense leads the ECHL with a 4.08 goals per game average. The Cyclones have scored five or more goals in seven of the 13 games. The club has also exploded for three or more goals in a period seven times, including six times in the last 14 periods of play.

THAT'S ALWAYS A 'PLUS': The 'plus/minus' statistic that measures the number of times a player is on the ice when an even strength goal is scored or allowed, has been particularly favorable to the Cyclones this season. Nineteen of the twenty players on the roster right now are even or better. David Desharnais is +12, while Jean-Michel Daoust is +5. Thirteen players on the roster are +4 or better.

WINNING WAYS: The Cyclones have a 9-3-1 record on the year (.731 winning percentage), the fifth-best record in the ECHL. The team is also tied for sixth in the league in home wins (four) and could move into a tie for fourth place on the circuit with a win tomorrow night.

NO FUNNY BUSINESS HERE: Hockey fans may try to figure that because Gerard Miller and Bryan Schmidt are both defensemen, they must be playing together to accumulate these point totals. Miller and Schmidt are both right-handed shots and do not play together. Cyclones defensemen have accumulated 36 (7-29-36) of the team's 139 scoring points (25.9 percent). Last season, the blueliners collected 119 (18-101-119) points of the 564 scoring points (21.1 percent) the team gathered.

JEFFERSON HALL ON MONDAYS: The Cyclones Coaches Show airs every Monday at Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. The show, featuring Head Coach Chuck Weber, takes place every Monday night from 7-8pm and is carried live on SuperTalk FM 96.5. The show is also carried on the station's website: www.supertalkfm965.com. Rookie David Desharnais and defenseman Matt Macdonald are the guests tonight.
