Cyclones Lose To Trenton, 5-3, Hold On To First Place

CINCINNATI, Ohio - A furious third period rally by the Cincinnati Cyclones came up short in a 5-3 loss to the Trenton Devils on Thursday night at U.S. Bank Arena. Matt Syroczynski's pair of goals were not enough to get the Cyclones past Trenton. Cincinnati continues to lead the North Division by one point over Trenton.

Trenton raced to a 2-1 first period lead. At the 9:09 mark of the opening frame, Matt Radoslovich re-directed a shot from the left point from Justin Coutu past Ryan Nie. Radoslovich's eleventh goal also had an assist from Chris Dyment. Cincinnati's first power play of the night was rewarded when Matt Syroczynski took a pass in the low slot from Barret Ehgoetz at the side of the net. Syroczynski's 21st goal also had a second assist from Frederic St. Denis. The Devils regained the lead at 14:18 when Brad Snetsinger also re-directed a Coutu shot from the left point for his 22nd goal of the campaign. Jeremy Akeson had the other assist. The shots on goal favored Trenton, 13-8, in the stanza.

Trenton scored twice in the opening 90 seconds of the second period to put the game out of reach at 4-1. Eric Castonguay's 24th goal at 43 seconds from Trevor Kell and Jim Henkel extended the lead to 3-1. It was Castonguay's seventh goal at the expense of Cincinnati this season. Jeff Prough's 30th goal at 1:25 pushed the edge for the Devils to 4-1. Matt Radoslovich and Akeson had the assists on the score. Cincinnati outshot Trenton, 12-9, in the period.

The Cyclones scored a pair of third period goals, the first came from Justin Johnson's 13th score of the year at 12:38. Johnson poked a puck in from inside the goal crease as Dustin Sproat and Matt Pierce assisted. Syroczynski's second of the night and 22nd of the campaigncut the deficit to 4-3. Ehgoetz and Mark Van Guilder had the helpers on the score. With a brief power play chance and relief netminder Loic Lacasse on the bench-Cincinnati was unable to capitalize on an equalizing score. A Jim Henkel empty net goal with 43.1 seconds remaining ended the contest and gave Trenton the 5-3 win. Cincinnati outshot the Devils, 10-3, in the period. For the game, the Cyclones outshot their guests, 30-25.

Gerald Coleman won his 26th game of the year with a 27 save performance for the Devils. Ryan Nie absorbed the defeat, turning aside 12 of the 16 shots he faced. Lacasse re-routed all eight shots he faced in relief.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones maintain the lead in the North Division (79 points). Trenton moves into second just one point behind Cincinnati (78 points). Elmira is in third (77 points) and Johnstown and Wheeling are tied for fourth with (76 points). The top four teams in the North Division advance to the Kelly Cup playoffs. This is the closest divisional race in the 21-year history of the ECHL.

The Cyclones are now 37-26-5 on the season, while Trenton is 35-26-6. The Cyclones hit the road for a Saturday night (March 28) game at Johnstown (7pm on MAX-FM 97.7 and 99.5). The pregame show airs at 6:45pm.
