Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte N.C. - Despite a late surge from the Gwinnett Gladiators, the Checkers managed to hold their lead until the final horn sounded with forward Marty Guerin leading the way with two goals and an assist in a 4-2 victory.

After a scoreless first period, the Checkers began to put the puck in the net and it was started by Matthew Ford's quick snap shot past the blocker side of Gwinnett goalie Joe Fallon at 11:40. The Checkers followed up with two quick goals the first of which was on the power-play. During the man-advantage, forward Marty Guerin's initial shot was stopped but he streaked into the crease to blast the rebound past Fallon at 17:58 putting Charlotte up 2-0. Less than a minute later, Charlotte blueliner Ethan Graham's shot hit the skate of Gwinnett defenseman Brennan Turner and deflected into the net at 18:42. After forty minutes, the Checkers held a 3-0 lead.

Guerin scored his second of the contest firing a rebound past Fallon after the goalie stopped the initial attempt by Ford at 6:09. With the Checkers now sporting a 4-0 lead, they allowed two goals to the Gwinnett but it wouldn't be enough to close the gap. The Gladiators forward Pat Bateman struck at 11:19 banking a shot off Jakaitis and into the net and defenseman Jeff Mason snuck in from the point to blast a shot into the net at 16:05. Time ran out on Gwinnett and the Checkers managed to skate away with the win.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on March 27 against the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
