TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: After a scrappy weekend series opener last night, the Cyclones will look to split their two-game set against the Chicago Express with a victory tonight. After all was said and done, a combined 13 power plays were handed out as the Express claimed a 4-3 win. This season against their Windy City rivals, the Clones have compiled a 2-3-0-2 record. Only in their first ECHL season, Steve Martinson's club has become one of Cincinnati's fiercest foes. In the seven 2011-12 meetings, the teams have been whistled for a total of 406 penalty minutes.
SCOUTING THE EXPRESS: With the victory last night, Chicago snapped its three-game losing skid, but still have gone just 3-4-2-1 in their last ten games. Not surprisingly, the Express have the third-worst team defense in the ECHL with 130 goals allowed this season (3.42 goals-allowed per game). Also not much of a shocker, Chicago is the sixth-most penalized team in the ECHL, with an average of 20.82 minutes per game. Pierre-Luc Faubert, who has six points against Cincinnati this season (including the game-winner last night), is also one of Chicago's top offensive threats. This year, he has 25 points in 38 games with Tyler Donati and Chad Painchaud ahead of him with 36 and 34 points respectively. Allen York is their active goaltending leader, going 4-3-1 with a 3.62 goals-against average.
About Last Night vs. Chicago: Pierre Luc-Faubert's third period goal broke a 3-3 tie and turned out to be the game-winner as the Express defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones by a 4-3 final score in front of 3,893 at U.S. Bank Arena. Dan Eves extended his assist-streak to five games with a pair of helpers while Matt Sisca lit the lamp twice in the loss.
Follow the Leader: Cyclones captain Mathieu Aubin is atop the team's scoring leader board, posting 31 points in 27 games. He also paces the team in multi-point and multi-goal games. The Clones are 10-4-0-3 when Aubin finds the scoresheet.
Among the Home Elite: This year, the Cyclones have been one of the toughest teams to beat. They have accumulated a 12-3-0-2 record at U.S. Bank Arena - good for an 76.5 winning percentage. That figure is third-best in the ECHL and one of just four teams to have a 70% home winning percentage or better (Alaska, Elmira, and Las Vegas are the other three).
Shutting the Door: The Cyclones have been an extremely tough team to beat when carrying a lead into the third period. They are averaging less than a goal-allowed in the final frame this season and have the third-fewest total goals-allowed in the ECHL (31) in the third period. In addition, their 282 third period shots-allowed is a league-low. Cincinnati is 9-2-0-2 when holding the advantage through 40 minutes.
