Wheeling Nailers News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA- The Nailers blazed out of the gates on Saturday night, getting out to a 2-0 lead, while outshooting the Elmira Jackals 16-5 during the first period of play. Unfortunately, the first place Jackals came storming back, as they erased the early deficit, skating away with a 7-4 victory at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Midway through the opening period, the Nailers took the lead on a goal that was so quick that the fans could have missed it if they blinked. The puck went back to Olivier Dame-Malka, who let a slap shot go, beating Timo Pielmeier high over the glove. However, the puck went in and out so quickly, that only referee Ryan Murphy's signal made the goal count. 3:13 later, the Nailers added to the lead, thanks to a power play goal off of a cross checking minor to Craig Rivet. Denver Manderson kept the puck alive at the point, handing off to Kyle Bushee, who sent a shot in on goal. Pielmeier stopped a deflection try by Brian Day, but Chris Barton was there to put back the rebound, giving the home team a 2-0 lead after one.

Early in the second period, the Jackals cut into their deficit, as Dustin Gazley won a face-off back to Nick Schaus, who scored on a wrist shot from the right point. With 9:28 remaining, Elmira pulled even. Craig Rivet sprung Jordan Pietrus down the right side of the ice, and Pietrus wired in a slap shot from the top of the right circle. The Nailers responded 1:49 later, regaining the lead, as Brian Day's dump-in took a funny bounce, allowing Paul Crowder to knock in the goal, while Pielmeier was caught in behind the cage. 2:54 after that, the Jackals tied the score once again, as Artem Demkov fed Maxime Gratchev, who scored on a shot from the slot.

At the 22-second mark of the third period, Elmira took the lead for the first time on the evening, as Louie Caporusso knocked in a loose puck on the right side of the crease, while the visitors were playing with the man advantage. Less than four minutes later, the Jackals added to the lead, as Dustin Gazley slipped a pass through the slot to Josh Brittain, who tapped in a shot from low in the slot. Maxime Gratchev's second tally of the night came 1:23 later, as Elmira opened up a 6-3 lead. Chris Barton and Jordan Pietrus exchanged markers in the final minutes, with Barton's goal counting as his second of the night.

Timo Pielmeier picked up the win for the Jackals, making 30 saves on 34 shots, defeating Peter Delmas, who allowed six goals on 32 shots for the Nailers.

The Nailers will travel to Reading on Wednesday to face the Royals at 7:05, before returning to WesBanco Arena on Friday, when they will play host to those same Reading Royals at 7:35.

NEXT HOME GAME: Fri. Jan., 27th - 7:35PM
