Streaking Aces Stopped by Steelheads 4-2

January 21, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

For the first time in over a month, and just the second time in over two months, the Alaska Aces played a hockey and did not earn points after a 4-2 loss to the Idaho Steelheads on Friday night at Sullivan Arena. Jacob Cepis had two goals, including the tie-breaking, game-winning goal in the third period. That was enough to erase a two-goal night from Alaska's Wes Goldie. The Aces nine-game win streak, 10-game home win streak, 13-game point streak, and 16-game point streak against Idaho all were snapped in the loss. Alaska fell to 29-6-5, with a 23-4 home record. The Aces will host the Steelheads on Saturday to complete their 11-game home stand, before hitting the road for nearly a month. Tickets are on sale now. Goldie struck early for his first of two goals at 3:27 of the opening period. Tyler Ruegsegger fed Goldie in the slot after Jerry Kuhn anticipated a shot, and Goldie buried the puck into a vacant net to make it 1-0 Alaska. The Aces outshot the Steelheads 10-5 in the period, and the score held through the remainder of the frame.

The Steelheads got on the board in the second when Patrick Kennedy pivoted his foot to deflect a David Fredriksson wrap around attempt into the net at 5:34 of the frame. Alaska regained the lead at 11:47 on Goldie's second of the night off of a one-timer from the top of the left circle on a power play. The Aces 2-1 lead was shortlived, however, as just 17 seconds later Cepis broke in on a two-on-one and took a feed from Derek LeBlanc before dekeing in tight on Adam Courchaine and putting a shot off of the left post, then crossbar, into the net. The game remained 2-2 entering the third period.

Cepis again found the back of the net, this time at 6:35 of the period when he redirected a shot from the blue line in the slot, and over Courchaine's shoulder to give the Steelheads their first lead of the night. Alaska could not find the equalizer, and Idaho put the game away with a Michael Gergen empty net, power play goal while Alaska was killing a late penalty.

Adam Courchaine (12-2-3) suffered the loss, making 16 saves on 19 shots, while Jerry Kuhn (12-13-3) made 31 saves on 33 shots, picking up the win. The Aces power play went 1-3, while the Steelheads went 1-3. Alaska outshot Idaho 33-19 in the game.

The Aces will host the Steelheads on Saturday to complete their 11-game home stand, before hitting the road for nearly a month. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
