TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: With back-to-back overtime victories, the Cyclones have now rattled off three straight wins and have pulled into a second-place tie with the Chicago Express. Tonight, they look to take over the number two spot in the North Division race with another win over their Windy City Rivals. On Wednesday, the Cyclones picked up their first-ever victory in Chi-Town with a 3-2 triumph, pulling ahead in the season series 4-3-0-2.
SCOUTING THE EXPRESS: Steve Martinson's club rallied last night in Toledo, but could not finish as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Walleye to extend their losing skid to three games. Tyler Donati and Chad Painchaud remain atop Chicago's scoring leader board, with 38 points and 36 points respectively. Together, they have combined for 7 goals and 9 assists against the Cyclones this season. Peter Mannino remains the go-to-guy in net for the Express. This year, he is 1-3-1-1 with a 3.12 goals-against average with a 1-1-1 mark against the Clones with a 3.29 GAA. With another penalty-filled game for Chicago last night, they remain the most penalized team in the Eastern Conference with 878 minutes logged in the "sin bin."
About Last Night in Kalamazoo: Taylor Aronson's power play goal at the 2:34 mark of overtime sealed a wild 3-2 victory for the Cyclones over the Wings in front of 3,572 at Wings Stadium. It was the second straight overtime win and pulled the Cyclones into a second-place tie with Chicago in the North Division standings.
Keeping Things Close: This season, the Cyclones have found themselves in closely-contested battles almost nightly. Nearly than 67 percent of their games have been decided by two goals or less. They are 10-9-0-5 this year in those situations.
Natural Born Killers: The Cyclones PK unit has really turned it on over the last couple of months. Since December 1, Cincinnati has extinguished 83 of the 98 opposing team power plays (84.7%). Only three times during that stretch has the opposition scored more than one power play goal in a game.
Just Call "ËEm Closers: Jarrod Skalde's team has been one of the ECHL's best when it comes to late-game defense. They have allowed only 34 third period goals this year, which is third fewest in the league. Their success in this department has led to a 11-2-0-2 record when leading after 40 minutes of play.
