Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Brooklyn, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones scored 13 runs on 20 hits Thursday night as they blew out the Aberdeen IronBirds 13-0.

Former first-rounder Matt Hobgood got the start for the IronBirds. After setting the side down in order in the first, he found himself in trouble in the second. Richard Lucas led things off with a single. Charley Thurber hit a ground-rule double, putting runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored Lucas. Xorge Carrillo knocked in Thurber with an RBI-single, making it a 2-0 score.

Those were the only runs Hobgood surrendered. He allowed seven hits over four innings of work. He walked one and struck out none.

Hobgood gave way to right-hander Ryan Berry, who struggled right away. With one down in the fifth, Javier Rodriguez worked a walk. Lucas doubled and Thurber walked, loading the bases. Brian Harrison lifted a sacrifice fly to left. Travis Taijeron and Carrillo hit back-to-back RBI-singles, making it 5-0 Cyclones.

Brooklyn broke the game open in the sixth inning. 11 Cyclones came to the plate as they scored six runs on six hits. Danny Muno and Taijeron both homered in the frame.

The Cyclones tacked on a run in the seventh and eighth inning to make it a 13-0 final. Jeff Walters (2-2) got the win after pitching six shutout innings. Hobgood (0-1) took the loss.

The IronBirds and Cyclones meet for the 10th and final time this season Friday night at MCU Park. The IronBirds will have 2011 third-round pick Mike Wright (1-0, 3.27) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Randy Fontanez (0-0, 4.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
