Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Lowell Spinners scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning for a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the first game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Thursday night at historic Centennial Field. The second game of the twinbill was postponed due to a power outage with the outfield lights and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday starting at 6:05 pm.
Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead on a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second inning from Sam Roberts, but the Lake Monsters were held scoreless over the next five innings as Lowell starter Raynel Velette (1-0) allowed just the two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings for the win. Andrew Jones tossed the two scoreless innings of relief for his first save.
Lake Monster starter Seth Frankoff (2-1) allowed just three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over the first five innings, but was charged with all three runs in the sixth to take the loss. Frankoff gave up a leadoff walk in the sixth to Jason Thompson and a double to Garin Cecchini putting runners on second and third before Travis Shaw tied the game with a two-run single into rightfield off first baseman Jacob Tanis' glove. Boss Moanaroa then greeted reliever Tanner Peters with an RBI double to leftcenter scoring Shaw from first base with the go ahead run.
Vermont had a chance to tie the game in the seventh as Nick Rickles led off with a double and pinch runner Michael Fabiaschi advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Tanis then hit a chopper between home and third that Jones grabbed and threw to first base where Shaw came off the bag early to throw home and get Fasbiaschi trying to score from third for the second out. Sam Roberts grounded out to short to end the game.
Shaw, Cecchini and Keury De la Cruz each had two hits for Lowell (16-17), which won its fourth straight game while the loss was the fifth straight for Vermont (16-15). Game two was scheduled to begin at 8:35 pm, but the lights at Centennial did not work when they were turned on near the end of the first game. They were finally able to get the four light towers around the stadium to work, but power was able to be restored to the four outfield light towers and the game was postponed around 9:45 pm.
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 6:05 pm and it will be the final two games of the regular-season between the Lake Monsters and the Boston Red Sox affiliated Spinners.
