Cyclones Dominate Aberdeen in 13-0 Victory

Brooklyn, NY -- After an extra inning loss last night, the Brooklyn Cyclones (18-15) got right back to their winning ways by defeating the Aberdeen IronBirds (10-24), 13-0, on Thursday at MCU Park. Their win, which is their largest margin of victory this season, gives Brooklyn a 7-2 mark against Aberdeen this season. The IronBirds have not won at Coney Island since June of 2009.

The 20-hit attack was a season-high, surpassing the previous high of 17 in a 16-5 win over Hudson Valley on June 30th. The 20 hits also fell two short of their all-time high (22 versus Tri-City on July 13th, 2007).

Brooklyn began the scoring by putting up two in the bottom of the second off of IronBirds' starter Matt Hobgood (0-1). Richard Lucas, who entered the night hitting .406 (13-for-32) over the last ten games, led the inning off with a single to right and advanced to third on a hard hit ground-rule double to left by Charley Thurber in the ensuing at-bat. A wild pitch scored Lucas from third and Xorge Carillo drove home the second run with a single on a line drive up the middle.

IronBirds' reliever Ryan Berry replaced Hobgood in the bottom of the fifth inning but only added to the damage by surrendering three more runs to put Aberdeen in a 5-0 hole.

With one out and the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Brian Harrison plated the third run before Travis Taijeron and Carrillo brought home the fourth and fifth on a groundball single to left and a fly ball single to right respectively.

Danny Muno, who had cooled down after a torrid start to the season, broke a 3-for-18 slide in his past four games by launching home run just inside the foul pole in right off of Berry in the bottom of the sixth. Charley Thurber prolonged the inning by adding a two-run double to left-center for a 8-0 lead. After Berry was replaced in favor of Orlando Alfonso, Taijeron provided the second long ball of the frame with a three-run blast well over the fences in left-center. Brooklyn added runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to round out the scoring.

Jeff Walters (2-2) entered the day with an earned-run average of 4.26 but delivered his best performance of the still-young season, striking out three and allowing just three base runners in 6.0 shutout innings. Steven Winnick, who relieved Walters in the top of the seventh, teamed-up with Eric Beaulac to toss 3.0 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Brooklyn bullpen in a grove. Over the previous five games, the relievers compiled a 1.53 ERA in 29.1 innings.

Lucas tied a season-mark in hits (Brandon Brown, July 3rd versus Staten Island) going 5-for-6 with an RBI and four runs scored. Taijeron fell a triple short of the cycle, finishing 4-for-4 with five RBI.

The shutout was the third of the season and second against Aberdeen as Brooklyn came away with a 1-0 road victory on June 28th.

The Cyclones close out their two-game series with the IronBirds tomorrow, at 7 p.m., with FDNY Night. Randy Fontanez (0-0, 4.15 ERA) makes his second start of the season and will oppose Mike Wright (1-0, 3.27 ERA).The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a Cyclones Visor courtesy of PepsiMax.
