Tigers Sweep Doubleheader with ValleyCats

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers have now won five of their last six games and are on a season-long three-game winning streak after sweeping the doubleheader with the Tri-City ValleyCats, taking the opening game 4-2 and winning the nightcap 3-2 at Dodd Stadium.

In game one the ValleyCats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. After a John Hinson double, Bubby Williams followed with an RBI single. Williams would later come in to score when Kellen Kiilsgaard reach on a Eugenio Suarez error.

The Tigers though would come right back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Javier Azcona and Zach Maggard led off with back-to-back singles and Jeff Holm hit an RBI double to score Azcona. A sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Maggard to tie the game, while Connecticut took the lead on a Suarez RBI double.

They would tack on an insurance run in the fourth on a Les Smith RBI single. Luis Sanz went the distance, throwing all seven innings and giving up just one earned run on four hits, while striking out a season-high nine. Sanz picked up his team-leading third win of the year. Jonas Dufek lost his first game of the year, dropping to 3-1.

The Tigers would jump on top early in game two. After a Chad Wright leadoff single, he moved to second on a Suarez sacrifice bunt and scored on Tyler Collins RBI single to give Connecticut the 1-0 lead.

Tri-City would tie the game in the third. Jacke Healey led off the frame with a double, he advance to third on a Neiko Johnson sacrifice bunt and came in on a John Hinson sacrifice fly.

Bo McClendon led off the fifth inning with an infield single, but was taken off the bases and replaced by Chad Wright at first on Wright's fielder's choice. Suarez reached base on a fielding error by the ValleyCats third baseman Matt Duffy that put runners on first and second. Jason King then ripped a double down the left field line to score both runners and give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Tri-City would cut the deficit to one with a Duffy RBI single in the sixth inning, but Daniel Bennett came on in the seventh to pick up his seventh save of the year, which is tied for most in the New York-Penn League.

The Tigers will take on the Tri-City ValleyCats for the tenth and final time tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
