Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds look to win back-to-back games tonight against the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). Aberdeen is beginning a two-game series at MCU Park after hosting the Cyclones for the past two games. The IronBirds picked up an extra-inning win last night against Brooklyn, 7-6. With two on and one out in the 10th, Wynston Sawyer hit an RBI-single to give the IronBirds the victory. Enrico Jimenez picked up the win after pitching a scoreless inning of relief. Tonight, the IronBirds will have former first-round pick Matt Hobgood on the mound. Hobgood initially joined the IronBirds as a rehabber but was officially added to the team's roster yesterday. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Jeff Walters.
Streaking IronBirds
Six IronBirds have hit safely in at least their last five games. Glynn Davis leads the way with an Aberdeen season-high 11-game hitting streak. Dudley Leonora has hits in nine consecutive games. Sawyer has a seven-game hitting streak. Joe Velleggia and Austin Goolsby have hits in six straight games. Martin Serrata has a five-game hit streak.
Hello Brooklyn
The IronBirds are looking to pick up their first win at MCU Park since July 28, 2009. The IronBirds are also looking to win back-to-back games against the Cyclones for the first time since July 8th and 9th of the 2009 season. With two wins against Brooklyn this season, the IronBirds have doubled their 2010 win total against the Cyclones.
Hobgood's Comeback Continues
Hobgood will be making his second start of the season for the IronBirds tonight. The fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft suffered a strained rotator cuff in the off-season. The 20-year-old right-hander spent all of last season with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds.
July Turn Around
After starting out the month of July with a 1-7 record, the IronBirds have gone 7-4. Aberdeen has won two games in each of its past three three-game sets, and split a two-game series with the Cyclones. Aberdeen is now hitting .261 in July.
Scoring Early
The IronBirds have been jumping out to early leads lately. Over their past five games, the IronBirds have outscored opponents 10-1 in the first inning. Aberdeen has scored runs in the first inning in each of its past five contests.
