-SPIKES RETURN HOME TO START FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND: The State College Spikes start a two-game set tonight against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the first of five straight games for the Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes and Scrappers spilt a pair of games at Eastwood Field in eastern Ohio over the past two night. State College is now 27-31 all-time against the Scrappers.
-LAST GAME: Carlos Mesa hit a solo home run in the tenth inning, his second homer as a professional and his third hit of the night, to help the State College Spikes rebound from losing their lead in the ninth inning to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field. Mesa, the Cuban defector playing his first pro season in America with the Spikes, took a 2-1 pitch from Mahoning Valley reliever Will Krasne deep to left field with one out in the first extra frame for what proved to be the game-winning run. Mitch Fienemann got the win and Vince Payne the save, his first of the year.
-SPIKES SEND BENEDICT TO HILL: Right-hander Matt Benedict gets the ball for State College tonight. In his last outing, Benedict went less than five innings in a start for the first time since June 24, taking the loss after going 4 2/3 innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks against Williamsport. The Western Carolina product earned his first pro win against the Scrappers with five one-run innings back on July 29.
-NIXON GETS START FOR SCRAPPERS: Mahoning Valley will go with right-hander Rob Nixon on the mound tonight. Nixon went six innings against the Spikes on June 30, allowing three runs on six hits and a hit batsman while striking out four in a no-decision. The Welland, Ontario, Canada native was chosen by the Indians in the 46th round of the 2011 draft out of Adelphi University. Nixon has allowed 19 hits over his last 10 1/3 innings on the mound.
