WHEELING, West Virginia - The Cincinnati Cyclones got 39 saves from Cedrick Desjardins for his league-leading fourth shutout in a 2-0 blanking of Wheeling on Saturday. It was the sixth time this season the Nailers have been shutout and it was the eighth time in Desjardins' career that he has blanked an opponent.
For the first time in team history, the Cincinnati Cyclones are 20 games above .500, with a 28-8-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division. The triumph gives Cincinnati a 12-2-1 record since December 15.
The Cyclones opened the scoring at 17:12 of the first period, when David Desharnais took a turnover behind the Wheeling net and fired a pass in front for Matt Syroczynski. Syroczynski took the bouncing puck and fired it over the shoulder of netminder Curtis Darlingfor his 14th goal of the season. It was the 27th time this season that Cincinnati scored the first goal of the game.
Cincinnati got the lone goal of the second period, when Andrew Martin fired a shot from the right of Darling, to notch his fifth goal of the year. Barret Ehgoetz, who created a two-on-0ne situation and Scott Reynolds picked up the assists.
Cedrick Desjardins stopped 39 shots in picking up the win, his eleventh of the campaign.
The Cyclones are 28-8-3 on the season, leaders of the North Division. Wheeling is 13-24-5. Cincinnati is 6-1 against the Nailers this season, clinching the season series. The magic number for clinching a playoff berth is 39.
The club returns to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night (Jan. 30), when the Charlotte Checkers come to town for a âWet Wednesday' with selected brands of beers priced at one dollar for a twelve ounce can.
