Charlotte Checkers News Release
Columbia, S.C. - The Checkers started their six game road swing with a loss to the Columbia Inferno by a score of 6-3.
The Inferno would strike first after a Daniel Sparre took the puck that deflected wide of Checkers netminder, Mike Ayers and buried it past the sprawling goaltender at 7:43 putting Columbia up, 1-0. The Checkers would answer back on the power play. Kenton Smith carried the puck up the right wing boards and put it on the stick of Jeff Kyrzakos who buried a one-time behind Inferno goalie, Jeff Jakaitis at 11:37 tying the contest at 1-1. Columbia would recapture a one goal advantage after Steve McJannet's shot rolled over the shoulder of Ayers and just past the goalie-line with only 44 seconds left in the period. This put Columbia ahead 2-1 after the first period.
The Inferno would increase their lead by a goal after Jeff Miles scored on a breakaway by sliding the puck between the legs of Ayers at 13:26.
During the final period, the Checkers would get within a goal after Kyrzakos fed a speeding Dallas Steward for a breakaway chance. Steward deeked around Jakaitis and flipped the puck over the prone goaltender at 4:13. This brought the game to a 3-2 Inferno advantage. Columbia wouldn't have to wait long to recapture a two goal lead. A wrist shot by Owen Fussey at 4:59 handcuffed Ayers and put Columbia up, 4-2. Later, a point shot by Jared Nightingale deflected off an Inferno defenseman and past Jakaitis at 8:42 bringing Charlotte within one goal again however; the Inferno wouldn't allow the Checkers to get back within a goal. Columbia would get goals from Todd Perry and Peter Tsimikals.
