Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - It wasn't as comfortable of a victory as it was a week ago, but the Johnstown Chiefs pulled off their second win in a row at home to begin 2008 with a 2-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers.
Joey Olson got the home team on the board with a workman-like effort on the power play to pot his second goal of the year. Olson tried a one-timer off of a cross-ice feed from Andrew Martens, but the shot was blocked. The rebound went right to the top of the crease where Olson picked it up and slid it past Rejean Beauchemin.
Dayton knotted the game up in the second period when Masahito Nishiwaki finished off a 3-on-2 rush with a one-time shot. Mike Berry carried into Johnstown's zone on the left wing and fed a behind-the-back pass to Brad Bonello in the slot. Bonello passed on to Nishiwaki who snapped it by Ryan Nie.
The game remained tied until 5:09 of the third period when Randy Rowe scored his 14th of the year for the game-winner. Olson slid a pass along the end-boards to Ryan Garlock in the left-wing corner. Garlock's pass found Rowe all alone in the slot, and the Chiefs' captain rifled a shot top-shelf over Beauchemin's glove hand.
After the final horn sounded Johnstown's Jean Desrochers and Dayton's Brad Bonello each received 10-minute misconduct penalties for inciting an altercation, and Bonello picked up a five-minute major for slashing for swinging his stick at Codey Burki.
In earning his 13th win of the season, Ryan Nie turned aside 22 of Dayton's 23 shots, and the Chiefs' power play finished 1-for-4 thanks to Olson's marker.
The Chiefs' next home game is on January 27 for the first-ever Chiefs' "Pink in the Rink" night. Join the fight against breast cancer as $1 from each ticket sold will go to breast cancer research. There will also be a live auction for the Chiefs' pink game-worn jerseys. If you miss that one, you can catch the Chiefs when they host Dayton on February 2 for the Chiefs' AAA Night.
