Cyclones Alum Justin Johnson Makes NHL Debut

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Former Cincinnati Cyclones forward Justin Johnson became the 15th Cyclones alumnus to make his NHL debut when he played for the New York Islanders on Friday night.

Johnson, a 32-year-old Anchorage, Alaska native, logged 43 regular season games with the Cyclones during the 2008-09 season and posted 22 points (12g, 10a) along with a team-leading 208 penalty minutes. He also notched six tallies (2g, 4a) and 26 penalty minutes in 13 Kelly Cup Playoff tilts. Including this season, Johnson has skated 151 AHL games, the majority with the Manchester Monarchs. At the Triple-A level, Johnson has amassed 16 points and 575 penalty minutes.

In his debut with the Islanders, Johnson earned 7:15 of ice time and threw three hits. New York went on to defeat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in a shootout

Prior to going pro, the 6-1, 220-pound forward was a four-year letter winner at University of Alaska-Anchorage. While in college, he contributed 35 points (13g, 22a) and 147 penalty minutes.

Johnson becomes the 15th former Cyclones player to skate in an NHL game, and the fourth this season. Mark Van Guilder (2008-10), Garrett Wilson (2011-13), Magnus Hellberg (2012-13), Kevin Henderson (2011-12), Cory Conacher (2010-11), Brian Foster (2010-13), Ryan Russell (2007-08), Frederic St. Denis (2009-09), Chris Mueller (2009-10), Greg Stewart (2006-07), David Desharnais (2007-08), J.T. Wyman (2008-09), Mark Dekanich (2009-10) and Cedrick Desjardins (2006-08) are the other 14.

The Cyclones will travel up I-75 TODAY to close out the regular season against the Toledo Walleye. The teams will drop the puck at 5:15pm with pre game coverage from the Huntington Center starting on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) at 4:45pm.

The Cyclones will return to U.S. Bank Arena for the 2014 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. While they know they will face the Orlando Solar Bears, the playoff seeding is still up for grabs.
