Akron RubberDucks News Release
Summary
The Altoona Curve score five in the sixth to take the series opener from the Akron RubberDucks 7-5 on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Turning Point
With a run already scoring in the inning via a bases loaded walk to tie the game, the patient Altoona lineup looked for more in the sixth. Liover Peguero fouled off six pitches as part of a 12 pitch walk with the bases loaded to plate the go ahead run and make it 4-3 Curve. Altoona struck for more a batter later when Nick Gonzalez doubled to center to clear the bases and put Altoona up 7-3.
Mound Presence
Tanner Burns got the start for Akron and was rolling early getting five of his first six outs via the strikeout. Altoona got to Burns in the fifth for two runs however and eventually ended his night after making him work to escape the jam. In total, the righty tossed five innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Robert Broom and Carlos Vargas combined to allow five runs in the sixth while striking out two. Luis Oviedo struck out two in two scoreless innings.
Duck Tales
Akron jumped on the board first in the first when Micah Pries doubled home Bryan Lavastida to make it 1-0 RubberDucks. Pries added on in the third when he singled home Jose Tena to make it 2-0 Akron. After Altoona tied the game in the fifth, the RubberDucks answered back in the sixth when Jhonkensy Noel scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 Akron. The RubberDucks looked to rally late in the ninth when Raynel Delgado lined a single with a two-base error into right, which scored Pries and Jonathan Rodriguez to bring Akron within two of the Curve at 7-5. But a groundout three pitches later ended the game and the comeback attempt.
Notebook
Noel extended his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 17 games, which are both the longest active on the team...Oviedo tossed his second scoreless outing since coming off the injured list and seventh this season...Game Time: 2:36...Attendance: 2,827.
