Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Aaron Pribanic tossed six innings of one-run ball to earn his first Double-A win while the Curve capitalized on Richmond miscues in the third to earn their first series win with a, 5-1, win over the Squirrels on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.
Pribanic (1-0), who balked in a run in the first inning, scatted four hits over his final five innings and did not allow an earned run in the win. He struck out two and did not walk a batter in his first home start in a Curve uniform. Tom Boleska followed Pribanic and did not give up a run over two clean innings of work. Michael Dubee pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Trailing, 1-0, entering the second, Altoona tied the game on a RBI groundout by Jeremy Farrell. They took the lead in the third on an error-filled play on a ball off the bat of Eric Fryer. With Pribanic on at third and Shelby Ford on at first, Fryer hit a ball into shallow center field that scored Pribanic easily to give the Curve the lead at 2-1. The ball scooted by center fielder Juan Perez and this allowed Ford to try and come all the way around from first to score.
The relay throw from second baseman Charlie Culberson got past Johnny Monell and Ford scored while Fryer moved to third. All told, the Squirrels committed two errors on the play and at the end of it all, Altoona led, 3-1.
Altoona tacked on an additional run in the frame on a Tony Sanchez RBI-single which brought home Fryer who evaded a tag from the pitcher to score the third run of the inning and give the Curve a 4-1 lead.
The Curve would add one more run in the fifth, again on a single from Sanchez, as they loaded the bases with no one out and Brock Holt came home to give the Curve their 5-1 winning margin.
A 2010 Eastern League All-Star, Clayton Tanner (0-2) moved his career record to 0-5 against the Curve as he went four innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Three of the runs allowed by Tanner were earned. Daniel Otero and David Quinowski each pitched two scoreless innings of relief in behind Tanner.
With the win, the Curve win their first series of the season and advance their record to 5-5. The Flying Squirrels drop to the same 5-5 record.
The Cure will welcome a new team to town for their next game as the Harrisburg Senators will arrive for a three-game series to end the first homestand of the season. The game, set to start at 6:30 p.m., is a Mirror Monday at Blair County Ballpark and fans can check the front page of the Altoona Mirror sports section for a money-saving coupon to the game.
