Johnson's Game Winning HR Helps Erie Split Twin Bill

After a tough loss in the first game on Sunday's doubleheader, the SeaWolves rebounded and took down the Bowie Baysox 2-1 in extra innings in the second game.

Erie struck first in the first inning against Bowie starter Tim Bascom. Michael Bertram connected on a two-out, opposite-field single to extend the inning for Bryan Pounds. Pounds swatted a double to the wall in right, scoring Bertram for a 1-0 lead.

Bowie tied the game in the fifth against Erie starter Mark Sorensen. Billy Rowell led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a Steve Lerud base hit. Rowell stole third and scored on a Carlos Rojas base hit, tying the game at 1-1.

The game would remain tied until the top of the eighth. Jamie Johnson led off against Bowie closer Jose Diaz and, on the first pitch of the inning, slammed a solo home run, his second, over the wall in right for a 2-1 lead.

Lester Oliveros was brought back out to work the bottom of the eighth after striking out the side in the seventh. Oliveros gave up a leadoff single to Xavier Avery. After the base hit, Oliveros struck out the side, preserving the Erie win. He finished with his second win and six strikeouts.

Sorensen took his second no-decision despite a solid performance. He went 5.2 innings, allowing a run on seven hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.

GAME ONE

The SeaWolves squandered away a large lead in game one of Sunday's doubleheader as they dropped their third straight to the Bowie Baysox 11-7 at Prince George's Stadium.

The ‘Wolves struck first in the top of the third against Bowie starter Oliver Drake. Jamie Johnson led off and extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with his first triple of the year down the right field line. Brandon Douglas followed with his first home run over the wall in left for a 2-0 lead. Michael Bertram and Bryan Pounds then hit back-to-back singles and Audy Ciriaco walked, loading the bases for Scram. Scram cleared the bases with a three-run double over the head of centerfielder Miguel Abreau for a 5-0 lead. Erie reloaded the bases with Ben Guez and Justin Henry drawing walks. Jeff Kunkel was then hit by a pitch scoring Scram and Johnson walked scoring Guez for a 7-0 advantage.

The Baysox cut into the lead in the fourth against Erie starter Casey Crosby. Brandon Waring led off and doubled. Robbie Widlansky singled to put two on. After Ronnie Welty struck out, Caleb Joseph doubled home Waring making it 7-1. Miguel Abreau grounded to second and Widlansky scored on a Douglas error. Carlos Rojas capped off the inning, grounding home Joseph to make it 7-3.

Bowie would cash in against the Erie bullpen in the fifth. Jeff Fiorentino led off with a single off of Cory Hamilton. Waring was hit by a pitch and Widlansky singled loading the bases for Ronnie Welty. Welty singled home Fiorenino making it 7-4. Joseph singled home Waring, cutting the Erie lead down to two at 7-5 Pedro Florimon drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 7-6 game. After striking out Abreau, Hamilton issued his second bases-loaded walk of the inning to Rojas, tying the game. Hamilton was lifted in favor of Austin Wood. A Greg Miclat sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run for the Baysox. Fiorentino capped off an eight-run inning with a three-run home run to make it 11-7.

Erie would never recover from the 11 unanswered runs, falling 11-7 and dropping to a game under .500.

Hamilton (0-2) took the loss going 0.1 innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on three hits.

Crosby took the no-decision going four innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
