TODAY: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in the finale of a rained-shortened series...The Flying Squirrels and Curve had their scheduled contest for Saturday night rained out at Blair County Ballpark...The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, August 23rd beginning at 5:30 PM.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in game three of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Enters the season rates as the #30 prospect in the Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Suffered the loss in his first start of the 2011 season 4/10 against New Britain...Allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings plus one batter...Struck out five batters and walked one...Five of the seven hits he allowed went for extra bases (four doubles and a home run)...Gave up a leadoff home run to Joe Benson on the second pitch of the second inning...Gave up three straight hits to start the fourth inning including a two-run double to Benson...Allowed the leadoff man to reach three times in six innings...All three leadoff men who reached scored...Recorded five ground outs and four fly outs...Threw 72 pitches, 47 strikes...Threw 20 pitches in the first inning, 24 in the fourth inning...Threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 22 batters he faced...Threw three pitches or fewer to 15 of the 22 batters he faced...Spent the entire 2010 season with Richmond and went 9-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts...Struck out 79 batters and walked 64 in 149 innings...Named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star, but did not pitch in the game...Finished the season ninth in the EL in ERA...Went 0-4 with a 3.93 ERA in seven starts against Altoona in 2010, allowing 25 runs, 15 earned, on 42 hits in 34 1/3 innings while striking out 19 and walking 20...Only Flying Squirrel that is a member of the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster...Selected in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Right-hander Aaron Pribanic gets the nod in game three of the series for the Curve...Enters the 2011 season rated as the #28 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system according to Baseball America...Received a no-decision in his first start of the season 4/11 at Akron...Allowed three runs on five hits in five innings while striking out two batters and walking one...Three of the five hits he allowed went for extra bases (two doubles and a home run)...Tossed a perfect inning in relief on 4/7 at Erie, striking out two batters...Spent the entire 2010 season with the Bradenton Marauders and went 7-6 with a 3.33 ERA in 27 starts...Struck out 71 batters and walked 33 in 154 innings...Led the Florida State League in innings pitched, while finishing tied for first in starts, and ninth in ERA...Recorded 247 ground outs and 130 fly outs (1.9 GO/FO)...Participated in the 2010 Arizona Fall League and went 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 11 appearances with the Mesa Solar Sox...Allowed seven runs, four earned, on 18 hits in 18 innings on the mound...Finished fourth in ERA and was tied for fifth in appearances...Acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates 7/29/09 from the Seattle Mariners along with first baseman Jeff Clement, shortstop Ronny Cedeno, and pitchers Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock in exchange for infielder Jack Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell...Began the 2009 season with Low-A Clinton going 7-6 with a 3.21 ERA in 17 starts...Held opponents to a .231 batting average against...Named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star...Went 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA in seven games, six starts with Low-A West Virginia following trade to the Pirates...Made pro debut with AZL Mariners in 2008...Went 1-2 and allowed eight runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings spanning three games, one start...Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Nebraska.
BLAME IT ON THE RAIN: The Flying Squirrels had a game postponed due to rain for the first time this season as last night's schedule game with Altoona was washed out...Last season, Richmond had just two games lost to rain, 4/26/10 at New Britain which was made up as part of a doubleheader the next day and 8/12/10 against New Hampshire which was canceled.
RUN RECORD: Roger Kieschnick scored three times Friday night, the most runs scored by a Flying Squirrel this season...It matched a career-high for the 24-year-old who also scored three times 7/19/09 at Bakersfield while with Advanced-A San Jose...Kieschnick was the first Flying Squirrel to score three runs since Nick Noonan and Thomas Neal each scored three times 8/8/10 at Portland (34 games)...Darren Ford holds the franchise record for most runs scored in a game with four 8/8/10 at Portland.
NO DOWDY ABOUT IT: Reliever Justin Dowdy extended his scoreless innings streak to 7 1/3 with a pair of scoreless innings of relief on Friday night...The 27-year-old has allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters and walking one...He has stranded three of the four base runners he has inherited while recording two holds...Opposing hitters are just 1-for-20 (.050) against him.
NO FREE PASSES: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff has issued an Eastern League-low 13 walks through the first nine games of the 2011 season...Starters have walked 11 batters in 45 2/3 innings while relievers have walked just two batters in 34 1/3 innings.
CURVE BALL: The Flying Squirrels and the Altoona Curve meet for the first time in 2011 in their current series...The two clubs will face each other 17 times this season including 11 meetings at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona...Last season, the Curve won 16 of the 26 meetings between the two teams...Richmond went 3-8 against Altoona at BCB while going 7-8 against the Curve at The Diamond.
